Just about to pull the trigger on some 105 5800 brake calipers - but compatibility crossed my mind.

I'm using Tiagra 4700 shifters - are the cable pull ratio's different or am I ok?

Cheers

They're the same pull ratio, its fine. The 4700 shifters are very close to identical to the 5800 shifters in fact.

Thought that was the case, but just wanted to check.

    Odd compatibility fact for you:-

Your 10-speed Tiagre 4700 shifters have the same gear-pull ratio as the Ultegra R8000 11-speed derailleurs (not the older 6800 version though), so you can (should you so desire) upgrade that heinous long-arm front derailleur monstrosity to the Ultegra R8000 version, and upgrade your rear to the shadow mech to save a little weight (~60g) and gain a lot of shifting performance.

    You sure about that?

That would imply that 6800 gear pull ratios aren't intercompatible with r8000?

I imagine there might be some slight difference at the front but it's (as I understand it) within tolerance to the extent that they are intercompatible.

As I understood it, 4700 shifters pull the same amount of cable on each shift as the shimano 11 speed groups, so if attached to an 11 speed derailleur on an 11 speed cassette they'd work for 10 gears of the 11.

    Sorry, you're right!

Usually you can mix same-speed components, however Shimano 10-speed 4700 is NOT COMPATIBLE with any other Shimano 10-speed components (i.e. 4600, 5700, 6700, 7900), but is compatible with all 11 speed (5800, 6800, 8000, 9000) systems as 4700's gear-cable pull is aligned with the 11-speed systems. So you can intermix Tiagre 4700 10-speed components with 11 speed components, and even use 4700 derailleurs as 11-speed items with 11-speed shifters.

I have Tiagre 4700 shifters operating Ultra R8000 derailleurs with a 10-speed chain/cassette and all works perfectly (and better than the original Tiagre mechs) as a stop-gap before going fully 11-speed.

My bike's a 2016 Giant Defy 2, w Tiagra 4700. I upgraded the callipers to 5800, with no problem whatsoever. I had to resue the long lock nut for the front calliper, so make sure you don't get rid of that!.
