Replacement for a Genesis Day One 20

Until recently (when it was stolen) I had a Genesis Day One 20 bicycle. There was much about this bike I loved - it had a 'nippiness' about it - like I had an enthusiastic terrier straining on a leash - it had drop handle-bars - disc brakes - and sturdy tyres (my commute to work often involves cobbles and at one point a muddy riverside path). However - it was HEAVY! And, to be honest, I think the internal gears were more trouble than they were worth, not least because it made for an awkward gear-changing mechanism. So, for my replacement bike, I'm quite keen to get a bike with the following attributes:
- nippy
- drop handle bars
- at least a few gears (there are a few hills on my route to work)
- disc brakes
- light (aluminimum frame?)
- tyres not too thin so that they can handle cobbles and muddy paths

I'm having to buy a replacement bike (with insurance money) through an online bike retailer called 'wheelies', so, annoyingly, I can't test ride alternatives, so any advice would be much appreciated. Wheelies sell the following bikes which seem to be contenders...

Giant Toughroad SLR (£899)
Saracen Hack 1 (£999 - potentially out of my price range)
Cube nuroad (£999 - potentially out of my price range)
Scott speedster gravel 20 (£1099 - probably too expensive for me)
Kona Rove DL (£899)
Merida Silex 200 (£1000 - potentially out of my price range)
Specialized Diverge E5 (£799)

Thank you!

Will
