First Road Bike. What to get?

New to the forum and looking for some advice on my first road bike.

Having signed up for my first triathlon in July and wanting to do some sportives later on in the year also, I am looking for my first road bike and have a maximum budget of £1,000 (not a great deal but have read that you can get some good bikes under this price).

Would people be able to recommend anything?

Thanks!

A Triban 540 would be super smashing.

A superb bike with a great groupset and wheels for the money

Or, if you want to save a bit of cash, and still have a great bike, just with a lesser groupset and wheels, the Triban 520 is still a good bike and good VFM.

I've not ridden Tribans but the specs look good and I've heard good reviews / comments about them.

Others that would be worth considering are:

Couple of cannonades - CAAD12 is slightly over budget but IMHO one of the best bang per buck bikes available today at any price.

Buy a second hand bike, you'll get a far superior bike for the same money.

If you want new and great value for money have a look at the Rose pro SL.

Which offers what for the extra £300 over the Triban?

£860.04. Full 105 including crank and brakes unlike the triban. Much lighter and in my opinion much nicer looking with better finishing kit and wheels.

https://www.rosebikes.co.uk/bike/rose-pro-sl-105-bike-now/aid:821335 - not seeing the cheaper version. £953.09. Even the chuck out Tiagra Pro SL is £692.

The 1.5kg is almost irrelevant against being able to go into a Decathlon store and having them fit the bike for you. It's a first road bike so that's always a benefit.

No denying the Rose is a nice bike. But worth 50% more? And the Triban just keeps winning tests.

Only if you know what you are buying, have the budget to replace any parts and the know how/contacts to do so at very minimal cost.

CAAD or Triban as above. CAAD is well cool.

If people want to pay big money for fancy paint jobs, and some stickers, I’m sure the manufacturers will supply them.

It’s also worth remembering that a lot of stolen bikes make it onto the used market.

If you can get a Caad12 in a sale then it’s a very good aluminium frame (I’ve just got a disc version and it’s lovely). If you can fit a size 58 then I think start fitness have one on offer for £1099.

Otherwise I’d be considering a Boardman Team Carbon (rim brake version) which has a full carbon frame for £1000 and generally gets great reviews.

That triban is good value fitting in mostly 105 and Mavic Aksiums for that price though! Just change the brakes for some 105’s as tektros often aren’t very good.

Paul’s cycles and hargroves often have a lot of bikes on sale - you might find a bargain that way as long as you can workout what size you need.

The brakes on the Triban are Tektro numbers, and actually just as good as the 105s IMO. Even if you wanted 105 calipers, it would still be cheaper to buy a pair, than fork out the extra for the Rose. The Mavic Aksium wheels on the Triban are not bad at all either. The Triban comes with a lifetime guarantee on the frame as well.
  • Thanks everyone.

Had been looking at the Triban but will possibly go for the CAAD12 if available in my size.

    Paul’s cycles have a size 56 caad12 105 2017 model (rim brakes).

Cube Attain gtc 2017. Quite a few sizes and it’s a carbon frame with 105 groupset. Seems a bargain.

Cube Attain got race 2017 - carbon frame in a lot of sizes and Ultegra for £999.99!

  • If you are thinking about Cubes https://www.rutlandcycling.com/bikes/ro ... ey_373882# £1019 with SAVE50

They size small, a 56cm will be good for ~5'8", mine is a 58cm and I'm 5'10" with a long torso.

Don't buy anything that looks too good to be true and you'll be fine. Harder to spot if you don't know enough about what you are looking at though

I'd go for the Caad if it were me

Edit: I prefer the Cube actually

So that rules out all used bikes then.

Not necessarily, just as long as you know what to look for, or have someone who does, there are some bargains to be had, that aren’t hooky. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who will try and get shot of a pup / hot bike, and hope someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing comes along.
