windstopper base?

I've just bought a Rapha hardshell jacket, for wet commutes, and it's great but...

it's not as windstoppy as a softshell, and with just a regular LS base it's a tad chilly, on the arms mostly.

Now I could just wear a thin LS jersey as well, and this works for the chill issue, but that's another thing to put on, and take off, and so on.

What I need is a slightly warmer base, with some windstopping effect.

Any suggestions?

Cyclesurgery have this on offer...

and Gore do one too:

ps do not, under any circumstances, suggest merino.... okay?

I've been using this all winter and would highly recommend it:

The windstopping panel does make quite a difference compared to the other base layers I have.

    The hardshell is windproof.
Two windproof layers seems overkill to me.

yeah I was a bit surprised cougie, but there you go.

I suspect you might find that using a windstopper baselayer under your hardshell will be a pretty sweaty experience.

In my view those windstopper base layers are more suited for extending the temperature range of non windproof garments, e.g. when worn under normal jerseys.

The Craft ones with the windstopper panels are nice but the windstopper doesn't extend to the sleeves so wouldn't really help you.

For your particular issue I'd probably suggest a heavier weight base layer or your existing solution of an extra LS jersey. Or even a pair of arm warmers under your current base layer.

When did you find it cold ? If it was during that ridiculously cold spell then that's the coldest weve had for years.

A heavier base layer will sort it out.

Craft windstopper base layer for me this morning - but instead of a jacket, not as well. I'd be surprised if the problem is really that the Rapha jacket is not windproof.

If it's the arms, can't you wear arm warmers under the LS jersey?

I could do the armwarmer thing but as I said, it's another thing to put on, take off, put on... (repeat)

A thicker base may be another option, but like I said, it's a wind thing really. I only need more windstopper on the arms, primarily. My back and tummy is fine.

Have you tried the windstopper bases MrB123, or just speculating? If the former, which one do you have?

Not a baselayer, but I have one of these which would fit under a jacket - although £145 for a windstopper layer ain't cheap! I got mine in the sale, and with xmas vouchers, so I paid nowhere near this.
It's actually thinner than I thought it would be - I haven't used it yet as I'm waiting for slightly warmer weather - but it does have windstopper panels on the arms as well as the body.

I've got one of these which is great, but as I said not much use for you because the windstopper doesn't extend to the sleeves.

It sounds to me like you didn't have a thick enough base layer on, so you got the cooling effect in spite of the windproof outer.

I have a DHB SS base layer with a windstopper front, but as others have suggested, I use it under more breathable layers to extend their comfortable temp range.

    This.

Keeping warm is more about trapping layers of air which warm up and keep heat next to your body.

I know everyone is different but I bought the l/s Perfetto and have worn it with a base layer down to 2 degrees (dry) and 5 degrees with some rain. The combination kept me going. Both occasions I used merino wool.

I am not convinced that a 2nd stopper layer will help.

What material is the Rapha made of? Gore or Rapha's own version?

If it keeps the wet out, it should be keeping wind out. I might be wrong but I don’t think you can do waterproof without being wind proof.

so next time my arms are cold, I'll just tell them they are actually warm 8)

I'm still a bit cold on the WS base idea (groan) so I think I'll just try a warmer/thicker base, as many of you suggest.

    Is that a new thread....?

Looking at the wind chill forecast for the weekend - you definitely need a thicker base. Or a house around you.

I recently bought a heavier weight baselayer from Tog24. It was well priced and has kept me very warm both cycling (under the Prefetto) and skiing (only garment under my ski jacket).

The downside is that is bright orange

and made of merino wool, not that I am suggesting merino to you.

    It is very good though.

This merino wool base layer thing is freaky.
I've only just got one and am amazed that the ridiculous claims that they don't smell is actually true !
It's got to be kinder for the environment like this.
