Brakes and braking power

I am currently running some TRp 960 brakes on some 26.5mm wide carbon clinchers. As the brakes are about 10 years old they were designed pre the wide wheel craze.

In order to run them I have to have the Calipers open as wide as possible. I am wondering if this results in a less powerful brake as pad to rim contact occurs with barely any Caliper movement? Does optimal braking force generally occur with more Caliper movement? Dos this even make sense?

ultimately I am looking at whether a should replace the brakes for something designed for modern wide rims or would I like not notice a difference?

Any thoughts are appreciated

Thanks
Mike
