Not a great feeling, can remember how much it hurt to get it.....not helped by the fact that he was seemingly pumping out 400w/hr average and is 20 years my junior.
Boo!!
Now. Where does one go for therapy?

Move to a location where hardly anyone rides?I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles0

hehe probably no 'fun' in that either.....I can see a dystopian future ahead where that tidy brace of wee crowns disappear one by one, and my legs only get weaker......Oh wait, that's already here.....meh!!0 -

Do not dwell on the past. Just click on your age group and ignore all the kids. There is usually some geriatric superman who you have to battle against.0

LOL... that's just what I do ... there are plenty of 70-74s to give me trouble “You may think that; I couldn’t possibly comment!”

Good advice. Probably will try to take it!
What I really need is an 'Old Man of the Mountains' category . . . . if I need to grow a flowing white beard for that, so be it.0 -
Or you could just ride your bike for enjoyment rather than keep searching for the strongest windy days to try to prove yourself the fastest...

Or, you could go to the Canaries, or Girona, where pros spend the winter, or San Sebastian (1 day race last w/e of July) so when you see KOM's owned by Kwiato, or GvA or Thibaut Pinot or the likes, you don't feel nearly as bad.
EDIT: Just for laughs, because I've spent some holidays there, I went and took a look at the last climb of the Clasica San sebastian:

The first non-pro cyclist is in 24th... and is a pro triathlete. The best attempt that I can't relate to a pro rider or a pro triathlon is at no. 62, a mere 4 minutes slower than Kwiato last year.
Edinburgh is still safe from the hands of pros, but only because it was only the start of last year's Tour of Britain.0 -
I always think, well I did my best on that day to get KOM and they did theirs today. Then look at their age and say yup they should have beaten me as they are x amount of years younger.
I am nearly 48 and if it takes someone 10 years younger to beat me, then I'm doing pretty good in my eyes.0 -

I apparently I have two, one I think is mostly though it’s somewhere popular it’s a slightly less used route, only a few Seconds in it anyway. The other is steep wet climb and has grand total of 10 people! I suspect most wherent daft enough to attempt to ride it hence I’m a few mins ahead!0 -

I'm still trying to get under twice the time of one of the Yates brothers, on one of the climbs round here after they used it on the Tour de Yorkshire0 -

Likewise... I occasionally get one saying I've lost a running KOM because a proper runner has finally done that segment.0 -
What's a KOM?0

KOM = Kickoff Meeting! These guys are all skipping work to ride a bicycle! pfff...0 -
I get this stupid message every week because I made the mistake of taking some KOMs just down the road from Woburn mountain bike park - every weekend it's guaranteed that a least one numpty will leave their Garmin running in the car as they drive home. I'd almost welcome someone depriving me of those KOMs.0
-
I'm almost certainly the slowest cyclist round here, in my age group or otherwise, but having nothing to do with Strava means I'll never have it confirmed...
Ignorance in my case is definitely bliss0 -
I've had about 100 of these emails since the new year. Only 1 has proved to be actually legit.Blog on my first and now second season of proper riding/racing - www.firstseasonracing.com0

Mate of mine, female, recently took one of the Girona climbs off Ashleigh Moolman, which I thought pretty cool.0
-
The opposite of this is when you discover you have a KOM 2 years after the event, because someone has subsequently designed a segment you already have the fastest time on (I only have two KOMs but bizzarely the only worthwhile one is of that type).0
-
Probably worse when you’ve got a running KOM (or equivalent) and you get that notification to say someone’s taken it and it’s some guy who’s done a thirty mile ‘run’ at pretty much marathon world record pace.
Flipping cyclists0 -
It's all relative. I've got a couple of KOMs out here, but only because there's a lot less cyclists than when I was in Surrey and the fastest ones haven't ridden those segments hard. My days of worrying about Strava leader boards a long behind me.
I do still hate receiving that email though...... lol ;-)0 -
Not KOM related, but it's funny. A guy that started out riding by doing pub rides has started doing real group rides now. Good for him. However, he has a horrible habit of posting a very short ride of about 7 miles as "21 MPH SOLO, BY MYSELF".
But, then they post the 7 miles return route home separate later and you see them plodding along at 14mph. The 21mph being done downwind as well, the wind here is out of the west 90% of the time.0 -
You can turn off those email notifications if it bothers you."You really think you can burn off sugar with exercise?" downhill paul0

I don't have that problem: I don't have any friends in Strava. Now that I think about it, I don't have many friends in real life either...0
-
I'm sure I read on this forum that one guy was so fed up of the people stealing KOM's thing, that he created a segment that finished up his driveway and into his garage.
I frequently have people taking one on my KOMs (very few, from years ago) and when I look into it. It's someone who had been mountain biking in the forrest down the road and amazingly managed to do 70mph all the way home !"The Prince of Wales is now the King of France" - Calton Kirby0 -
