How tf am I going to fit full guards + 28mm fairy resistant commuter tyres

Afternoon all,

I'm due to be picking up a Boardman Hybrid Pro this week:
310276?w=637&h=403

It's main duties are going to be towing my daughter to school on a follow me tandem, then getting me to work, and also weekend rides out as a family - perhaps 20-40 mile out and back rides in the summer - it may also be called into use for towpaths and a local common, and my gf may well ride it as well on occasion.

The ability to resist the fairy, especially for the jaunts to school and work are critical, and in that respect I am a fan of the Durano Plus tyre, and have it in 25mm widths on our two winter bikes, but for some reason they do not make a folding variety in a 28mm flavour.

I am aware of the reputation of the Marathon, but wonder if that will be too much of a hindrance for the longer road rides - I don't want to dread them, but equally I see them as good training potential, so am undecided

Our Kona Minute child carrying bike is wearing Vittoria Hyper Voyagers in a fetching brown colour, and these have been on all sorts of surfaces (With panaracer flataway inside them) and so far so good.
These are 35mm tyres though, and although I could repeat this setup with a 28mm option (panaracer flat away stuck in there too) I am still unsure.

Opinions please?

Oh and the pedals - I think I will ideally just want flatties on during the week so I can ride in road shoes, but if we do a longer run at the weekend I'm bound to want proper pedals (I tend to use Look) or SPD as a minimum.
The other option is I leave a pair of shoes at work, and simply use SPD, as I have a set lying about, and suitable shoes too.
Would you baulk at the idea of swapping the pedals in and out, or no biggie?
Suppose it should only be a 3 minute job.

I use Voyager Hypers in 32mm with some tubeless sealant in the tubes, don’t want to tempt fate but...
I’ve got a set of flat/spd pedals I’m not using. You can have them if you chuck a tenner into a cancer research pot.

I've wider marathon tyres than that on my winter bike and it keeps up with my pals on their summer tyres.

And the flat/SPD pedal offer above sounds perfect for you.
  • For that mixed usage have you considered Tannus?

I’ve been commuting for around a year on a pair of 700x28 including a few longer rides <40 miles and have got so used to the maintenence and problem free running of them any performance hit has become a non-issue. They’re no worse than the 28mm Marathon Plus I was using previously.

I'm currently using 28mm Conti GP 4 Seasons as my winter tyre and find they are more puncture proof than the Marathon + I used to use. They are more expensive than M+, but worth it if they save me one or two stops a year in the cold/rain.
  • Rubino pro 28's are what you need, a good balance of weight, grippiness and price. Am annoyed they don't do a 35 for my new commuter... Only word of caution is that once they have worn out, replace them as they become puncture prone.
If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.

Thanks BTR - will check your listing, but i expect for me a rackbag will have limited use, as I need to get a large laptop in - so pannier only I suspect.

Anyway, bike collected on Thursday, very helpful and knowledgable (Used to race for Cube in his teens) chap put it all through for me, and advised me to come back the following day, as it was then coming down to £750, instead of £800 - did not have to do that at all, above and beyond.

So the bike all in, after various discounts, and the £80 of free accessories, weighs in at £527.50 - can't really grumble with that at all.
One thing that could be useful to anyone starting out, is that instead of the 10% off the value of the bike in free accessories, they offer a system where whatever value of accessories you spend money on, they will match that amount for you to use on other accessories - so if you needed shoes, helmet, tools, track pump etc, you could get £500 of kit for only £250 - well worth bearing in mind.
Not sure if they do that on all values of bikes, but if they did, you could likely end up with a free bike to keep or flog on I guess!

Anyway, to my latest conundrum - the rear area that I would normally secure a mudguard to, looks like the below......
Pondering sugru, or my cable tie\innertube solution - not sure a p clip is going to be of much use in this configuration sadly - bit of a bummer, but the rest of the bike is so good, I kind of felt i had to.
Given the clearance, I think I am going to need the mudguard butted up as far as it can go.
I'm sure there must be some way to hack it, just need to fathom it out, and not in a mahoosive hurry.
Need to prep my Langster this freezing cold weekend for my first of likely 6 Velodrome accreditation session on Thursday, so that will take priority.

I have some SKS, Tortec and PDW guards in stock, so will see what might fit best.

  • Have you ridden it in anger up a local hill segment in "lightweight mode" before adding heavy tyres etc., to see how it compares to your road bikes? :D

£527.50, with that friendly advice from the store member for the extra discount the following day, blimey!

Re rear mudguard, isn't there an attachment nut on the other side?

    Thought so, cheers.

What a good price for a pretty light commuter/leisure bike.

I have 28mm Rubino Pros but in the shed not on the bike. The highly unpredictable lack of grip in the wet scared the cr*p out of me, to I took them off and replaced with Marathon Supremes.

  • What do you reckon/know the max tyre size the Hybrid Pro will take with safe clearance?

The stock tyres are 32 - I reckon 42 or even 45 would fit - I can measure the gap tomorrow if you like?

I was just curious after you posted photos, sadly n+1 is not an option, but that's more clearance than I thought! :)
