I think you mean the marketing people. And not forgetting that's a bike for pros to use, who are all *possibly* more able to deal with the lack of gears than us hobbyists.

I noticed that Andy Fenn managed to drop his chain on the cobbles in Noekre whatever it’s called yesterday. I thought there was a clutch in the rear mech to stop this happening.

There is no place for 1x on a road bike other than for marketing purposes and I've yet to hear good argument for it.

Quite a few years ago I had 26" Spesh Enduro that had 3x9 groupset. It was cumbersome, heavy and would drop the chain on technical descents unless you were in the big ring at the front. I converted it to a 1x10 and all those issues disappeared.

I also had a 29" hardtail that I converted to 1x10 because I thought it was the thing to do but whilst I loved the simplicity of the setup, on long flatish runs I was constantly running at the bottom of the cassette and the jumps between some of the gears meant you were either grinding of spinning. I subseqently sold the 26" and Hardtail and bought a 29er FS which now has 26/36 x 11/40 and its superb. Never drops a chain and has the complete spread of gears you need for any kind of offroad use.

I recently bought a gravel bike and that also has a double 32/48 x 11/34 and its perfect. 1x groupsets have a use, Cyclocross is a good example as is certain types MTB use but absolutley not on a road bike.
