Specialized Stout SL - wheel play and bearing inspection

Morning,
I just bought a second hand Specialized FSR XC Expert with front and rear Speacialized Stout SL hubs.
I've noticed a little bit of play in the wheel bearings when I wobble the wheels from side to side so I thought I'd check the bearings and see if I could tighten anything up. I've since learned that these are probably sealed bearings so I thought I would inspect , measure and replace.
I've removed the rear wheel, cassette, brake disc and QR spindle. The axle ends have a small grub screw on either side which I've removed but can't see to get these off.
Any ideas? Do I need to tap the axle out with a hammer or is there a hidden allen slot inside the axle?

Once you undo the grub screw the end cap should pull off.
Judging by the state of that wheel I doubt they have ever had any maintenance. The collar is probably corroded in place. Wrap a cloth around it and try and wiggle it off using a pair of pliers.
Copied from another forum:
Undo grub screws and remove end caps.
Bash NDS axle through hub with rubber mallet untill the freehub bearing pops out, theres a little washer/spacer with it so dont lose it.
Bash from freehub side to remove non drive side bearing.
Freehub comes of with a 12mm allen key through the hub and a 10mm through the freehub and is a sealed unit.
Bearings are 1x 6000 2RS and 1x 6001 2RS“Life has been unfaithful

Thanks JBA, I'll give it another go. Yes they look pretty nasty don't they!
