can a clamp on mech be used in place of a direct mount mech?

    Possibly, there are different varieties of front mech, some models have the clamp high up, others have the clamp lower.

    So it depends on
    1.is the seat tube area clear for the clamp, I. E. No bottle cage bolts in the way
    2. Shape of seat tube, if not circular, then that may be a problem
    3.is a clamp available for the seat tube diameter

    There may be other reasons.

    And there's likely to be a chunk of metal for the direct mount in the way.

    Direct mount is usually added to bikes as a clamp on wouldn’t work (it’s more expensive) so while not impossible, it’s pretty unlikely you’ll get a clamp on to work.
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
