Where to ride?

Been a road rider for close to 10 years now, but a couple of hairy incidents in the past week coupled with a 5 month old son have made me start to question my road future.

Been thinking about selling the road bikes and going off road, initially thinking mtb - but distance to travel for trail centres pretty much poo poo'd that idea.

So started to look into CX. I live on the doorstep of one of the biggest country parks in the area, complete with an old pit heap and the more I look into CX the more it looks like the ideal CX play ground. There are also a few other country parks linked via waggonways/fire roads to mix things up a bit.

I have no intention of racing just wondering where you guys ride or if there are any things to be concerned with riding in a country park?

Cheers

  • CX/Gravel is brilliant, swap the tyres off, you can do proper road, change again, mud, change again all the fire trails, lanes etc. It's super versatile. You still need to use some roads to connect but you'd be surprised how far most of the population could get/do off road on a CX.

This website may give you some info, sportive rides but give you a feel for the routes.

I’ve done two of their rides, South Downs Way and Salisbury Gold Rush.

I prefer wider tyres than most cross bikes though. I do a bit of multi day bikepacking and off-road on 33mm tyres and my body knows about it the next day. My bike takes 700x47mm. But and this is purely personal, you can’t beat the front suspension of a fast 29er.....
