What is the best method/website/mapping site to create a route that can then be downloaded onto my device and will give me turn by turn directions? I have tried creating routes on Strava and downloading them as GPX files which give me the route on the map but no turn by turn. Any advice is greatly appreciated

I've used RidewithGPS to create routes which have worked successfully on my Touring Plus. I do it so infrequently though I couldn't tell you how.

    I use ride with GPS.

I do find the touring pretty erratic though. I would just keep it as simple as possible. The countdown to turns can be misleading and I often think they are more trouble than they are worth.
If following the pink line works my advice would be to stick with that.
  • I have a Garmin 810 and also use ridewithgps, I get TBT although I don't upload by first sending to Garmin Connect, I drag the GPX file into the 'New Files Folder'.

I use MapMyRide and do this too. I also get TbT directions on my 520 in gpx format.

  • Komoot is good. Automatically sync's routes with Wahoo Elemnt/ Bolt
  • I've found that Strava routes don't retain the turn-by-turn, even when you export the gpx and import it in RideWithGPS.

If I want turn by turn, or custom cues (I like to signify the start and distance of climbs on my routes) then I have to create the entire route in RideWithGPS and export it as a TCX file for my Garmin Edge Touring to play ball.

I’ve never had a problem I export as GPX from Strava drop into Garmin/newfiles and it works. I make routes quite regularly, I enjoy new places though I’ve never trusted the Tourings auto route etc.

What is frustrating is Garmin Connect route planning is simply not good enough.

When you plan a course it's not obvious that it shares routing with runners, so it may take you the shortest way around a roundabout, which may be anticlockwise (zoom in to proof read and drag to correct before saving) which will effectively send you off course each time you ride the correct legal way around one as a cyclist, overriding the route will often confuse the unit causing it to shut down. It can also navigate you the wrong way down a one way street, less easy and sometimes impossible to spot when proof reading as you can't zoom in enough on the Google mapping, so the indications arrows referencing that a street is one way are not visible. This is not an issue with ridewithgps route planning as although they also use Google Maps you can zoom in enough to view one way streets clearly, plus if you optimize for 'driving mode' one way streets and roundabouts will be navigated correctly. This is something I hope Garmin will change, can't believe they allow Garmin Connect to share routing with runners, no wonder many plan courses using alternative sites.

Doesn't apply to the 'Garmin touring' model, but the blue tooth versions are set up to be used with their own software so you can send the route via Bluetooth to the unit, yet their own software is in short nowhere near as good as the FREE competition! It really wouldn't take that much surely for a company with the clout that Garmin must have to rectify what must be easy updates,

Even the Ride With GPS planning occasionally sends me the wrong way round a roundabout because it thinks I should be using the shared footpath / cycle path. It's usually OK but it crashed it completely right at the end of one ride.

I wish TomTom would do a cycling computer.

I've only noticed it do that if I select 'cycling', if you select 'driving' it hasn't done that with me; so far that is! What I do like is that you can toggle between the two; useful if you want to navigate over a footbridge for example.
