This (in medium cage) should work although officially only went up to 30 teeth, lots of people ran it with 32. ... -prod85967

One other point to note is that it's a 10 speed derailleur officially, but should be backwards compatible for 9 speed shifting as the ratio is the same. The Ultegra 6500 (last 9 speed ultegra) only does 27 teeth cassettes at best (again, officially).

There is a slight risk that you might not be able to adjust the high limit screw sufficiently to accomodate all the gears as 9 speed cassettes are slightly wider than 10 - I'd rank this as unlikely however.
  • Mountain bike 9 speed. XT long cage will go up to 11-34. Heavier, but tough.

The current sora rear will also do it, and will take 32 tooth cassettes even in short cage configuration (medium cage/gs specced to 34 tooth).

But OP wanted to keep it ultegra.
