Gear Cable Thickness

I was about to order this gear cable set to use with a Sram Red setup (from about 2009):-

I've never really thought about it before but I read that apparently Sram specify slightly narrower cables than shimano (1.1mm vs 1.2mm) - news to me!

Am I best of ordering some 1.1mm cables or is there no real difference? Will 1.1mm inners work OK with standard Shimano outers?

Cheers thanks!

Yep. A tenth of a mm is negligible.

SRAM will work with any Shimano cable. SOme say it is easier to thread the cable through the shifter with the narrower 1.1mm, but I have never had a problem.

SRAM for SRAM, Shimano for Shimano.

Theres a reason why SRAM make them and as they are both the same price just buy the SRAM ones.

    Work fine with Shimano outers.

    Ribble or Tredz for cables.

I have some Red shifters of the same vintage and worried about this prior to my build last year having read that some have had problems, but the generic stainless cables I already had on the shelf for shimano threaded through without a problem. I later had some new old stock apex shifters which came with a sram cable set and there wasn't a noticeable difference.
