How can I get my Garmin edge 1000 to use the sdcard? It will not read the map file from the card. I have to move to the map file to the memory. It will not record to the card even though the setting is set to sdcard. I have an 8gb sandisk C4.

Perhaps card is too big, not fast enogh, or wrong make?
The Wife complained for months about the empty pot of bike oil on the hall stand; so I replaced it with a full one.
  • From Garmin's knowledge base:

Question: What is the largest size microSD card I can use with my Edge 1000?

    Answer:

The Edge 1000 has an expandable memory slot into which a microSD* card can be inserted. This card provides the ability to install detailed mapping to enhance the device's internal basemap.

It is recommended a standard speed card, no larger than 64 GB, be used in order to get the best performance from the device. Class 4 to 10 is considered standard speed.

While considering memory limitations, another limitation is the number of individual mapping segments. Roughly 5250 map segments can be transferred to the Edge 1000. The Edge 1000 is pre-loaded with detailed mapping called Open Street Maps (OSM) as well as a Cycle Map, a base map and a digital elevation model. (DEM). The preloaded maps consist of approximately 2300 mapping segments (Aproximately 1000 for Europe). It is suggested to transfer additional mapping to a second microSD card to accomodate the additional segments.

*While any brand of microSD card should work, Garmin has only tested more common brands such as SanDisk and Kingston. The MicroSD card should be in the FAT32 format.

    From Garmin Forum.

Can/did you format the card using the garmin first before loading maps?
If you just loaded the map from your computer it could be in the wrong format. you need to ensure that the FAT32 file system is used, not NTFS etc

    Thanks Paul
I was unaware that I should use the Garmin to format the sdcard. I will do so tonight and update this post on the result.

    Thanks for all replies!

    It Worked!!!!
I checked the format of the SDCard and it was exFat. This is an 8GB card. I re-format using Fat32 and the Garmin sees the card and actually writes its file structure to it!
It also list the map file now. Thanks so much for your help, this as been bugging me for years!!!!

  • New map updates just released with Garmin Express are too large to install to the Edge 1000 memory and it asks for a micro SD card to be installed to load the maps. However, my Edge 1000 shuts down or at least the screen goes blank no matter what SD card I use even after a full format.

Mines the same, an over 10 gb update, not enough space on the internal memory and it states getting an sd card although I already have a 32 gb installed, all formatted and recognised by my pc but when updating the synchronising indicator on express is just constant and doesn't do anything

Yes, the screen on my Edge 1000 just goes blank a few seconds after it has been installed. I have tried various cards, all formatted but each and every one does the same

My issue seems to have been resolved by plugging the garmin into the computer when it is in standby mode rather than just switched off, update went ahead fine and garmin switchs on without issue

Is there any advantage to using an SD card? Will device load quicker or anything like that? I have never used one but have a spare 2GB card knocking around.

for recording your rides - yes - if there's an issue you can take it out and connect to a computer - can't do that with the internal memory if the Garmin is toast (eg dropped in a pond ... )
