Noisy disc brake

I couldn't resist a massive discount and bought a 2016 Synapse. My first disc braked bike.
I took it out today and was surprised by the quite loud brrrr sound from the front when braking - it didn't seem to affect the efficiency.
I then had a look at the front disc and it looks to be more air than metal. I assume the noise is the pads vibrating a bit as the slivers of metal pass between them.
Is this likely to be the explanation or might I have a problem?
The rear disc is a 140 and has more metal than air and is, as far as I can tell, silent.

Yes, your theory is indeed correct.
In fact I have a pair of drilled discs by TRP which make a very nice, more subtle kind of Bbrrr
