Early CAADs

I've been looking at starting a new build and I really like the look of the old CAADs. CAAD 3,4 and 5. I've never owned one and they look cool IMO, but I have read they are super, bone shattering stiff and its not worth the time/money/effort. Then I've read that some love them and its totally worth it.
I suppose its largely a matter of opinion so I thought I'd ask yours.
What do you folks think?

Personally love them.
I do think they are harsh in comparison to modern frames and wider tyres. But the coolness makes up for that.
If this is N+1 then i say go for it.0 -
I had a lime green CAAD 4 and it was wonderful - light, stiff, ultra cool.
Never had problems with it and never found it to be "too stiff etc etc ". People who say that generally ride 105, average carbon frames and go into n club runs aspiring to be in the fast group ripping their legs off or some such tosh.
Miss it every day - utterly brilliant bike for no money at all. Perfect crit bike, training bike, racing bike.
Buy one. Buy one. Buy one. Buy it now. Buy one. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it now, post pics and make me jealous.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

Love my caad5. It's not harsh or uncomfortable at all but it's no noodle either and has a nice connected, direct feel that some carbon frames lack. I've done 10 hour+ rides on it in perfect comfort, done countless club runs and crits. Everything but the frame itself has been replaced at least 2 or 3 times and it's had a respray to keep it looking sharp. Still going strong0

cannondale are a US company, just owned by a Canadian Group.
But they do make very cool road bikes, especially the CAAD and supersix range.
I'm very tempted myself now, I've been pontificating about it for nearly a year. I'll just have to sell one of my Trek's first, interested Matthew? It's only got 105 on it and has been used for team / club rides. The shame of it.0 -

Trek
105
Team/Club runs.
All the words that make me ejaculate with joy.
Unfortunately following the S5 purchase I do not have a brass razor to rub together, but thank you anyway for the kind offer.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

Nah - not cool enough. It's just a white Cannondale with rubbish gears.
Has to be a 4 or 5, preferably in Saeco to match the top I've just been given or lime greenPostby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

No I know, but it does fit the somewhat limited brief at least.
I'm looking at something like this...

I have an klein quantum similar in that the Klein and early Caads have huge stiff ally tubes. This however is not uncomfortable. This discomfort I get on the Klein might have something to do with the 22mm continue tubs inflated to 120psi.
Fit wider tubeless tyres at lower pressures and the bike will be fine. Better than fine early Caads rock.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0 -

HUGE STIFF TUBES....lovely.
However, Klein Quantum...now you've done it.Pain is a momentary lapse of character.0 -
My CAAD4 (R1000, red to yellow fade, Centaur groupset) is lovely to ride. It has, though, in recent years, been demoted to the turbo trainer or sunny summer days for actual riding. All other times, it is mounted on the wall as a piece of art. I sometimes think about selling it, but I know I'd miss it.0

Yeh, the plan is to buy one, spec it up to a decent standard, with a view to riding it only on perfect weather days...with some nice shades looking cool as f*ck
However I think we all know its going to end up on the wall at some point...looking cool as f*ckPain is a momentary lapse of character.0 -

My first 'proper' road bike was a CAAD 5 - the advice I got at the time was to go for a great frame that could be upgraded, and it was a great base to build on.
It's still the frame that gets the second most miles, by virtue of being my Zwift bike - if I were to go back to racing crits, it would be my #1 choice.0 -
Though I do regret going for black, and not the Saeco paintjob :x0

What’s the plan? Deep rims or Spinergys?
New groupset on it, really good scrub and clean and grease up be lush-er. Racey like Tracey in fact.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am
