Need new forks - Which ones

Hi All,

My trusty Giant Trance 4 27.5" (2015) has recently taken a battering and the standard suntour air forks have packed in, they've pretty much compressed and won't decompress, I've taken them to LBS and they've noted that they're pretty much f**ked, they can service them but mentioned that it may cost a fair bit. I'm still riding them but it's pretty much like riding a rigid fork as they have maybe 20mm range....and no they're not locked out.

Now I've been looking at upgrading the forks for a while anyway so am thinking of doing so, but as I am saving for a house at the moment I can't really justify spending more than say £300 for them, so am thinking of maybe some second hand ones, seen a few that people have taken off new bikes and are selling off considerably cheaper, but what I need to know is which forks to go for at this price range? I ride a lot of trails locally like Cardinham and Haldon, as well as the annual trip to BPW, so ideally I'm looking for something fairly all mountain style, say 140-160mm air sprung. Was thinking Rockshox Pike, any other suggestions worth looking at?

How about a set of RS Revelation dual position for 332Euros from bike-discount.de?

Cheers for the input guys, liking the look of both of those, probably favouring the revs though. What is the main difference between the RS Rev and the RS Pike? As both seem to working out at around £300, although the Pike is technically second hand, just hasn't been used for more than one ride....which makes me wonder why they are selling it!

Also how hard would it be to fit new forks, is it a really simple fit? Bear in mind that I'm utterly useless at pretty much anything hands on. Will pretty much anything 27x5" fit, my frame has the overdrive tapered steerer so am assuming the forks will need to be a tapered steerer also?

It's not technically too difficult, you have to remove your existing forks and then it will be a case of measuring the new fork steerer taking into account your stem and any spacers you currently have. You'll then need to cut it and most likely install a star nut (if its a new fork) - if it's second hand you might need to remove that, cut and then refit a new one. All in all if you have the required tools it shouldn't take long. I did my first one a few weeks ago and only took me 30 mins. Just make sure you measure twice, cut once!

Plenty of available step by step videos.

Take the bike and new forks to your LBS and ask them to swap the forks for you if you aren't confident in doing it or don't have the required tools. Shouldn't cost more than £15-£20.

Might need to use the bike shop unless the op can cut and install a star nut to the new fork.

Cant say I've ever fitted a star nut, just gone to local bike shop and got them to fit one and bought something while i was there to make it worth there while doing it for me.
  • The mattoc is a better fork than the Revelation for that money as far as I'm aware, I think I'd go with that option. I think I'd rather do that then spend good money on a 2nd hand Pike too.

the Mattocs are the better option as you'd probably need to spend on a service to make sure the Pikes are good inside etc.

Doesn't say in the wiggle description the stanchion size, hope they are 34 or 35mm?
