Big Chainring Part

Hi. Does anyone know what the little screw in metal nipple thing is that goes between the big ring and the crank arm, and what’s it for? Bought some new stronglight rings snd there’s a hole for one to go. Don’t know if i should bother fitting one or not?

    Stops the chain slipping between crank and ring if the chain drops off the outside.
