Hi all,

I have an old 98/99 cad2 (road) that I sometimes use to commute to work on.
Similar to this

It runs fine on the road but just wondering if I can change the wheels (cxp11) for something a little more capable off road?
Seems to be plenty of clearance for wider tyres if I stay with 700c.
Or can I switch to 650b wheels with 42mm tyres?

Thanks

  • You'll gave to be careful with the tyre clearance for the frame/fork, even if this is pretty generous you have to consider the rim brakes (calipers) which will likely be 28mm max (seeing as they're older).

I don't think you'll be able to go for 650b wheels as the brake pads won't reach the rims (even if the tyre would fit in the brake caliper.

You could easily stick some new wheels on there, probably opt for a wider rim with 25-28mm tyres if they'll fit in the calipers. It depends how 'off-road' you want to go. I doubt CX tyres would fit in the calipers but some of the newer breed of gravel tyres might

My CAAD4 will pretty much max out with 25mm tyres. I think you're after a different bike.
