SPD with platform - worth it

Are SPD pedals with platform worth it - i mean can you feel the support? Sometimes if you pedal hard the SPD pedals can be felt through the soles of the shoes leading to a hot foot. I was wondering if something like the Shimano M9020 or the M8020 with the larger platform work to provide a bigger contact area for the foot.

I've read conflicting review/opinions about whether the extra support actually makes contact with the shoe or not.

I ride Crank Brothers Mallets and yes, I am aware of the platform* and the improved spread of load and feel that I get with them. No hotspots.

*The pins in the platform engage well with the soles of my AM45s.

  • I had to switch to clipless as I damaged the tendons in my foot riding flats. I'm on Shimano DX M647 and the platform really helps support your foot - especially as the connection element pivots. The only problem is they are too deep in profile and are easy to catch on rocks and roots
