Hi – I currently have a MTB – boardman – and I want to change the size of the chain ring from its current FSA Comet - 42/27 that is sat in a mega exo 24mm BB. I would like a 50/34 - may help me keep up with mates who have the cyclo cross bikes on the flat.

I did try a new chain set and changed the BB to an FSA evo 30mm and a FSA pro 386 chain ring – not thinking about the spindle length. That needs to be 111mm and not the 103 of the Evo – tut!

Can any one recommend a solution – be this a chain set that will fit either the 24mm or 30mm BB in a 68mm frame. The current 24mm BB then has 3 spacers to fit the Comet or a chain set and different BB?? I measured the space between each bottom bracket outer edge, this is 110, including the BB and the spacers - then there is the crank thinckness on top of this.

Thanks, malc

On a 42:11 top gear yo can do about 30mph easily, nearly 40 at a high cadence, the reason you can’t keep up isn’t gearing but power, changing the gearing won’t make it any faster.

The CX bikes re on narrower lower drag (rolling and aero resistance) tyres, so you wouldn’t keep up with yourself on a CX bike while on your MTB.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • Thanks - ,,,,, I will go on the tyres and slight difference as the issue as they cant keep up on the hills.
guess I will skip this idea. :)
  • Thanks Oxoman - N+1 - good idea and was the plan A, have been looking for a while, I thought there would be some sales bargains but they didnt materialise.
