Current Status of the Chambon Tunnel?

Hi, we're planning a trip to le Bourg d'Oisans in the summer to do some cycling and watch the Tour pass through. I was hoping to tackle the route of La Marmotte on one day and just wondering about the ongoing status of the Chambon tunnel. I thought it had all been sorted out and reopened now, but after just reading a couple of local news articles (this one from July 2017 in particular) it seems as though it's still a bit of an issue and whilst it was open to light traffic this summer, cyclists were not permitted.

The article mentions that it should have been permanently reopened as of Dec 17. Does anyone have any local news on the ground out there as to what the status of the tunnel is now and/or likely to be come July 2018? :?

It wasn't a problem anyway because they put in a rather nice temporary road round the other side of the lake.

  • See you there BuckMulligan - we’re staying in Vaujanay for the same period. Loved seeing the Tour on each of the three days it was there in 2015. Good qu re the tunnel and that’s good info tourdriving- thanks to all!

Thanks for the replies. I had read that article tourdriving, just wondering if that's the end of the matter now? I'm perhaps unduly sceptical given all the issues and delays that they've already had with it!

Is the temporary road around the south side of the lake still open? And if so, is this preferable to blasting along the main road?

I'll appreciate a nice new road surface through the tunnel if nothing else!

I can't imagine they'll have pulled the temporary road up. It was a pretty solid construction with nice smooth tarmac. Definitely preferable if all the cars and trucks are using the tunnel.

  • Good news re the opening and it will be good if they keep the ‘temporary ‘ road open as well to save cyclists going through one of the tunnels as not always the nicest experience. Can’t wait to get up to Galibier etc again!

I know this is an old thread but I am planning to ride this road to avoid the tunnel into Bourg d'Oisens.

Is the bypass road RS 1091 still open? Does anyone know?
