The right cassette for the Tacx Flux Smart

I recently treated myself to a Tacx Flux Smart which my LBS put on a 11 speed cassette for me as I have a Giant Defy Advanced Pro 2 running 105. This is my winter bike and it's getting a lot of junk miles in. I'd like to get a cheap bike just for the turbo but cheap 11 speed bikes don't grow on trees. I’m thinking the easiest and most logical solution is if I find an old cheap bike, then just take the cassette from that and put it on the Flux. It won’t be replicating my usual setup but could be the cheapest way to go. If I found a 9 or 10 speed bike and put this straight on the Flux is that going to work?
Or am I being naive/an idiot?
I would put my Canyon Ultimate (Summer) on there but Canyon don't recommend their bikes going on trainers.

  • 11-speed 105 cassettes can easily be had for under £30, especially if you have Topcashback/Quidco active online or use British Cycling membership discount.

What I did was get a bike with 10spd.
I use 11-28 11spd on my good bike and 12-28 on my spare bike. The ratios are identical except the 12-28 is missing the 11t gear.

Beware that some smaller speeds do not work on the flux. They have a list of groupsets that can be used on the flux. So I'd consult That before you buy anything.

I have an 11 speed 52/36 to 11/28 best bike and a 10 speed 50/34 to 11/28 second best bike which now lives on my flux. Both work fine on the flux but the 10 speed needed a spacer and a very small bit of indexing...

If the chain is clean the miles put in on the turbo won't be having any significant wear 'n tear effect on your winter bike unless it's the corrosive nature of sweat that you're bothered by - in which case a towel should sort this.
