Connecting Android tablet to TV

I'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy S2 tablet to run the relevant apps that I'm using with a smart trainer.

I have a spare 32" Philips TV that I'd like to bring in to my set up if possible.

The TV is probably about 10 years old so it's not an internet TV or anything like that but I assume all the connections are the modern kind.

Will I be able to connect the tablet to the TV so that whatever is on the tablet screen will also be displayed on the TV? If so, how do I go about setting this up? Can I just get the appropriate cable or do I need some sort of dongle or other device?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

  • If you've got a spare HDMI socket then you could get a Chromecast and cast the apps on the tablet to the TV.

If the apps you want to use can't themselves be cast to the TV then you can cast whatever's on the screen using the Google Home app.

    Thanks for that.

Am I right in thinking that a Chromecast requires a Wi-Fi signal?

I haven't got fantastic Wi-Fi coverage in my garage so wondering if a cable connection might be better if such a thing is possible.

It must be. I run a lightening to HDMI lead from the iPhone or iPad to a 40" display monitor and that works fine. I found that linking the device to Apple TV would result in signal delay, jerkiness and drop outs. With the direct connection via the lead, things are 100% better.

    Micro USB to HDMI?

I do the same as philthy. I use lightning to HDMI connector cable from iPad to TV to watch whatever is on iPad on big screen. So I can stream free old movies from ok.ru, watch YouTube videos, iPlayer, look at photographs etc. My smart TV has trouble connecting to web because of our poor internet connection but the cable has solved that. You just plug the lightning end into your tablet and the other into the HDMI slot on the back of the TV, it asks a question on screen whether you accept this device, you press yes and then you are away.

You can buy an expensive Apple connector but these cheap cables from Amazon, Maplins etc seem to work fine. It used to work off my iPhone at first as well but for some reason no longer recognizes it. You just need to establish what connection you need for your Android tablet.
  • As suggested a micro usb to hdmi cable could work but I've no experience of using one.

Another (more expensive) solution could be to buy an Android TV box with LAN and a pair of powerline adapters so you could have a cable connection to the router/modem, assuming it has a spare LAN socket.

There seem to be a huge number of varying reports around as to whether the cables actually work on different models of Samsung tablet. It's all pretty confusing.

Suppose I'll just have to give it a try. A Chromecast will have to be the fall back position if a cable won't do the trick.

    Found this on DC Rainmaker...
