Rear Indexing problem / chain failure

I came off before Xmas and only looked at the damage at the weekend. I thought that either the rear mech or the rear mech support took the brunt of the force, as it was not indexing at all after the crash. As it's not a hanger then the latter is basically going to kill the frame, unless I can straighten it.
In preperation for the op, I'd located a spare rear mech and was in the process of stripping the old one off, only to discover this......
It certainly explains the lack of indexing but I'm more surprised that I was able to turn the cranks with this damage.

New chain fitted and the old mech still works as it should, which is a surprise but at least the bike gets to extend it's life beyond it's current 22 years0
