Show your winter hack bike.

I'm seeing more and more riders out on what looks like expensive summer bikes with no mudguards on the roads this winter. Have we lost the age old art of knocking together a winter hack from whatever you have in the shed?

No. People just use what they want to use. There wasn't really an art to it anyway.
I use my Madone with Ultegra 11 speed and deep rim tubs partly because I want to, partly because I don't like it very much so don't really care what happens to it. The good bike won't come out until May.
I may get around to sticking some Ali rims on it one day.
The normal winter bike is now the permanent turbo bike.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

That might apply after mid November this year, given that existing members were given grandfather rights to the old price.
Very odd choice by Zwift, surely if you want to increase your customer base, you make prices more attractive to new customers. I've just started a 7 day free trial on my annual leave week yesterday, while it's miserable and cold outside, but I have no intention of subscribing to £13 a month as things stand.
Maybe I have Scottish genes in me, but £156 a year easily covers a set of winter drivetrain and tyre consumables to ride in the real world.================

That's mine. Otherwise I have 1 road bike with no mudguards that I ride in any weather unless it's really foul.0 -

Sorry but your image is not visible - just a blank space with a "no entry" style sign in the middle. If it's in your Google images account then I think you need to allow public viewing or something similar to be able to share images.0 -

For 6 years I had just one bike so it had to be winter proof. Chose a Racelight Tk; quite lively geometry but takes proper guards with 25mm GP4S tyres. 11 years on and it's now the wet weather bike, with Chromoplastic guards, s/h 9 speed Tiagra mechs / shifters and a CX chainset. It's been joined by a lighter carbon bike with nicer kit that only goes out when it's mainly dry, but TBH I enjoy riding them both.
The wet weather bike certainly isn't a hack thrown together from the parts bin...0 -
Winter workhorse:
Crud mk2's I'm liking very much, just a quick wipe of the BB area after a ride and we're done.
Conti 4season tyres I can't recommend enough.0 -
It's hardly a hack, but it's what gets used at this time of year.

I've got two winter hacks for commuting on
1 x 2010 allez I bought in 2014 for £200 and renovated with new wheels and groupset a couple of months ago, now has mudguards which just about fit with the 25mm gators on it.

1 x Kona Dew hybrid I bought on gumtree for £56 and did a drop bar conversion on with bits and bobs I had left over recently. I'm thinking about building some disc wheels and putting hyrd or juintech discs on it next as the frame will do disc
