My 2011 Allez takes raceblade longs with the QR fixes - it works for me - it was my best bike - so wasn't worried about guards - but over time it's been relegated to a winter/wet trainer - I had the Crud RR on for a while - they've worn through (prob 4000 miles with a lot of grit on the road) - so the new SKS are a bit of a trial. The main issue for me will be puncture fits - removing a wheel means taking off 2 of the 3 mudguard fixings - not idea - but hey.
An alternative would be to fit P brackets which I also used years ago to fit a rack (since moved to a more suited bike!) - I'm seeing how the SKS's go first then will decide.
I gather the new allez's have more space for mudguards - would be nice, but not vital - I'd be peed off if I'd bought it specifically for that - and checked the mudguard mounting points - only to find that a fork recall removed those mounts....

So question is, post Fork replacement will Specialized or Evans be providing a means to attach the Mudguard Stays to the Fork Blades as the mudguard bosses have been deleted? I also echo some other peoples feelings on this one - this could have been dealt with better. The replacement fork doesn't have mudguard mounting bosses and potentially less clearance to fit full coverage mudguards (i.e. p35s). If this is the case I will be looking into making a claim/lodge a complaint. Longer term I will be probably be looking to get rid as I haven't got room in the stable for a bike that doesn't do what it says on the tin.

Spoke to Specialized to explain I wasn't happy, they did confirm that adaptors to go over QR (Axiom runners maybe) will be sent out to specialized UK (not sure how we get them though). Didn't offer much else despite me sofly asking for a refund!

Anyone's guess what the clearance on new forks will be like - it was tight enough on the original versions...

Doesn't an adaptor such as an Axiom Runner that goes over the QR mean that every time the front wheel is removed the mudguard will be moved? Could be a pain in the backside if you get a puncture on the front tyre whilst out on a ride and you have to start adjusting the mudguard once you put the wheel back on.

If there has to be a bodge solution for mudguards then I think I'd rather it was using P Clips on the fork.

Brief update if anyone is interested: forks duly replaced and it looks pretty much as expected - its the right colour anyway. Sadly there are definitely no mounts and clearance is tighter than before (conti GP4S 25mm) so even with mounts a normal guard is unlikely to fit. Looks like a set of SKS raceblades is the order of the day. Other than that, everything is good, and the winter bike is now back and ready for errr...hibernation as I bring out the summer bike :)

Hope everyone else gets their problems resolved...

My shop had my replacement Forks in early last week. Guy in shop confirmed there are no Mudguard Bosses on new Forks, but would have expected Specialized to replace like for like. Guy said he would call Specialized to see what's going off. I stressed I purchased this bike because it had the Bosses and clearance for full Mudguards (P35s) with 25mm tyres. I will call tomorrow to find out whether he got anywhere with Specialized or not (my guess is not). My stance will be very clear though, if the replacement Fork don't have Bosses or clearance to fit full Mudguards then I will be asking for a refund/exchange from the retailer. Just wondering whether anyone else has gone down this route yet?
Also, can anyone recommend an alternative frame/bike with racy or endurance geometry that has Bosses and clearances for full Mudguards? I'm not looking for a winter bike though which rules out Ribbble, Dolan, Kinesis etc.
  • Had mine done last Saturday, can confirm no mounts for mudguards.

Clc I softly approached the concept of a refund with Specialized and it went nowhere, but they did buy me a set of race blades from Evans (retailer I bought the bike from) and whilst they don’t go under the fork so there is less protection for the headset bearings they worked fine keeping water off me in the rain last week. Disappointed I’ve had to get a work around but at least the bike is 90% all weather ready and I’m happy to be back on the bike!

Let us know if you get anywhere with an exchange...

Offered via my retailed a few options including:- attaching mudguards via P Clip and using smaller tyres (i.e. 23mm) to address clearance issues, using SKS Raceblades etc.

My judgement is the replacement Forks are from the Tarmac SL4 (£1.5k model). A brief look at the Tarmac SL4 geometry chart suggest the Fork Axle to Crown (A-C) dimension is 368mm Vs 375mm for the Allez and the Fork Rake is 44mm Vs 47mm for the Allez. The reduced Fork A-C dimension is what is robbing tyre and mudguard clearance. I can't comment whether the change in front end geometry would be noticable or not, but the numbers are different.

I'll speak to Specialized tomorrow as I'm not sure this replacement Fork is really the optimum solution for me at least. I do want to keep the Allez though as it's not a bad bike and definitely better than a winter trainer.

I too run full mudguards with my Allez (it was bought as a winter training bike and commuter) and have just found out about the botch/tarmac replacement forks.

It effects the geometry no doubt and effectively lowers the front end and steepens the tube angles. So for me I have a bike I can no longer have full fixed muguards (i removed my front wheel to lock it up daily) it was also purchased with a 130 -17 stem fitted as it matched my race bike setup within 1mm here or there and now that is completely different.

Not sure what to do or where I stand?
