Rust

Appreciate this isn't specifically a CX question.

After a wet, muddy race on the weekend the bikes went into the shed without a proper clean, dry, and oil.

By the next morning the chain and part of the cassette has spots of rust.

1) Any suggestion as to how to get it off?

2) Any suggestion as to how to prevent a repeat (ideally that doesn't avoid me having to go through the effort of bike washing when all I want to do is lie on the sofa and rest my battered legs!).

    Lube it and ride it.

Make sure it's dry before sticking it in the shed.

Cheers mate, but what about my chain :lol::lol:
  • Don’t worry about the cassette. Once a chain moves over it the rust will be scraped off. As for the chain, so long as the rollers are ok inside the outer plates are going to clean up at the same way the cassette does through friction.

Surface rust just comes off as ^^^^^^^^^.

But putting it away wet might stuff hidden stuff up as well, like bearings etc.

If I'm lazy I bring them into the conservatory and stick a heater on the bits for a while.

Mine are all mountain bikes though, so dirt makes them look gnarly, and doesn't do much harm. Water though is deadly.

Use Paraffin on and old towel to get the rust off.

As above, clean the bike before you store it to stop it going rusty...
