I'm building a new bike and am torn between conti gp s2's and conti gatorskins , is the rolling resistance so noticeable that it out weighs the puncture protection ? All advice/experience welcome

Comments

  • I use gp4k all year round. Never had any issues in winter. Gator skins have better puncture protection but I don’t like the grip level the offer. Would prefer 4 seasons over gators

GP4000s ii’s are far better imo.
  • Unless anyone can correct me, https://www.merlincycles.com/continenta ... 71989.html with the 10% discount is the best deal going for these, ~£56/58/60 before Topcashback (depending upon size and whether you want Race28 tubes).

Gatorskins are like hosepipes - simply horrible in comparison to GP4000sIIs
  • GP4000 - no contest. Trivial P. 'hits nail on head; as does Dorset Boy.

I also tried 4 Seasons, but I think I hd a 2 tyres out of a bad batch.
  • Hands down either the GP4000S2 or GP4S over the Gatorskins!

The GP4S tyres are ever so slightly slower than the GP4000S2 ones, but have better sidewall protection. That's something I've found lacking in the GP4000S2 having had a couple get slashed open. Hasn't stopped me from buying them again though, one of my favourite tyres.
  • Just to see the comments ; what about gp4000s2's v vredestien forteza senso all weather ? Any views / experiences of these tyres ? A friend rates them quite highly ?

    GP4Ks over 95% of tyres.

Hard to beat unless you have specific goals / uses.

  • Is there a reason for only choosing the Contis? I don’t like fixing punctures in the dark, when my hands are cold, so at this time of year, the Contis aren’t my favoured tyres. I can’t fault the performance of them, I’ve had lots of issues with their robustness though ( cut to shreds, too easily defeated by the P* fairy at this time of year IME).

Hence why I run 38c tubeless tyres...

For me, at 76kg and 7kg bike, both variations of Contis wore incredibly fast compared to Fortezza. It's very strong and light tyre, but does not roll as well.Still miles better than Gatorskin, especially at gripping in the wet (nothing will grip 100%, mind you). Regular Schwalbe Durano are good for winter, too.
  • So which offers the best overall durabillity , grip and speed ? Gp 4 season , gp4000s or gp4000s11 ? ( think am gettin my wires crossed with different abreviations !
  • The benchmark tyre on any test you care to choose will have the GP4000s as the best all round tyre on the market. There are faster, better wearing, grippier, more puncture resistant tyres out there but no other tyre offers you a better balance of all them factors. It’s good at everything if not brilliant but it is certainly not lacking in any area. If you want a reliable tyre that’s fast enough, grippy enough and reliable you can’t go wrong with a Conti GP4000s

    Check out https://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/

The Fortezza's are super slow. I have the Xtreme version (which are maybe even slower!) and the difference between them and my GP4000SIIs is pretty noticeable.

but it is certainly not lacking in any area.

Except durability and puncture resistance, where it’s about as much use as a chocolate teapot.
  • It's nothing short of a miracle that a company can make arguably one of the best tyres (GP4000), and arguably the worst (Gator).

You laugh but every test conducted recently and every magazine review etc always puts the GP4000 as the benchmark for its tests. I find them quite durable and puncture resistant and the roads around North Yorkshire are hardly smooth as silk. Maybe you don’t pump yours up enough.

You lucky lucky cyclists over the border on your silky smooth TDF roads don't know you're born ;-)
Just ordered a pair off Ribble (£25 each until midnight tonight - cheapest I've seen anywhere). If they are as good as the GP4S I've had, then I'll be happy.
  • GP4000’s for me.
Tend to find if I get a flat it’s something that’ll get through any tyre regardless of puncture protection.
GP4000’s are grippy, Roll well and In my experience offer puncture protection as good as any other.
Just had Hutchinson tubeless tyres fall apart on a ride today, sent off to chainreaction for GP4000 23mm clinchers.
