Hi

I have a FSA Gomssamer chainset 52/36 with a BB30 bottom bracket and thinking of swapping for a shimano 105 50/34. Do I need to change anything on the bottom bracket or will I be able to remove the FSA and slot in the shimano 105?

Also thinking of changing the cassette from 11-28 to 11-30 so will I need to change the derallier to a long cage?

Comments

  • Short answer is Shimano do not make a BB30 crankset so the only way to fit a 24mm spindle is to use a BB convertor.

    1. Why don't you just change the rings instead of the whole crankset?
    2. You *probably* won't need to change the cage for a 30t, but will need to check you have enough capacity for 34x11 and 50x30.

Won't he have to go from 130 bcd to 110 bcd and therefore compact won't fit?

Nope. 52/36 is 110 bcd. The smallest ring that will fit on 130 is 38t.
  • For running a Shimano 24mm chainset on a BB30 Frame is either decide on adapter cups or a sleeve. Cups can be problematic and squeaky. Sleeve is better but once it’s in - it’s in. It also voids your warranty on the frame as it’s an unauthorised mod. But they are better. Your choice.

There are also lots of screw together adaptors like this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/roto ... prod130495. They are easy to fit and remove, and the one I used did not make a noise.

Seen them. They are essentially still cups and still squeak or crack . I tried plenty before using an FSA sleeve on my Sempre Pro. Pressed it in with a bearing press and not had an issue. It’s rock solid. But warranty was up so I took the chance. Every temp solution just can’t cut it. It’s still another interface prone to movement inside the shell.
  • I’ve converted my old Boardman Pro Carbon from FSA Gossamer PF30, to Shimano 105. I got the old PF30 shell and bearings out of the frame, with this

    Then got this.

Then the 105 Chainset fits straight in, the bonus is that the BB is now effectively threaded, and the external cups / bearings are larger, and mounted outboard, which I prefer.

The only trauma was caused by the self extracting FSA Chainset getting stuck, requiring a lot of swearing / dremmeling to get it out, but it was worth the stress.

    Thanks all for the advice.

The whole BB sizing was more complicated than I first thought.

Adaptors seem to add another part and potential creaking complication so ....

I think I will try to either just change the rings or buy another BB30 compatible crankset to keep it simple
