    6p / mile

Long ago I was being berated for my bike spending, on the basis 'You could drive for less than that', so I started keeping records.

A mate has just bought an electric car and reckons he can do 200 miles on £2 of electricity. I certainly couldn't cycle it for that.

So he/she does nor pay insurance? And road tax?

    No road tax.

I think alot of us cyclists already own a car. It's not often a case of which vehicle is the cheapest for a particular journey.

About £200 this year at a guess, most of that my new helmet.
  • I’m up to 2 grand already, by my reckoning  . Mind you, that’s probably the majority of the major bike bits related purchasing done now, and most of that was on ‘sale’ bits. The London Bike show is next weekend though, so that figure may go up a bit.
  • So far, I'm doing pretty well. The only big purchase of the year so far is flights to Spain to go biking out there. Otherwise, I've been very well behaved so far.

Bike service coming up soon though so...
  • Enough to buy a car. But less than a motorist spends in a year... I'm not against cars per se but the amount of them on the road.
  • Being a bit of a sad OCD cyclist I keep records of each bike costs and ride distances..
So far my fatty is 67p a kilometer..the Croix de Fe 48p the Genesis hardtail (10 years old this year but eberything but the frame upgraded) 46p and the Ellsworth a massive 102p per k.....all that suspension maintainence and 'pro' fettling...Ok so my total mileage is just over 4000, but that's a scary amount of cash.
On the plus side..the more I ride, the further I ride..the better the value! :D
    .
    09 Genesis Altitude 20 (853)
    07 Ellsworth Moment.. 2016 transmission
11 Genesis Croix de Fe (725)
    C20 Orrel 26" (531C)
    16 Dooooone (Calibre) Fatty
    07 Orbit 9531DB0
WINNER 2011 WMB Gear of the Year..yes folks Mr Averages do win :D
  • Being a bit obsessive I record mileage and spend...
    and it's really scarey..
The Doooone fatty, cheap and cheerful from GoOutdoors and my go-to fun machine is currently showing a profit of 3p per km.
This is because last year I got an insurance pay out for a broken seat tube..which a welder then repaired... :)
However up to that point costs per km had varied from 8p per km for my road bike..to a massive 61 p per km for my hard tail, which had had major upgrades and replacement gear to take to NZ...!
It doesn't do to be too clever :(

I've bought a set of brake pads a while ago and a suspension bush for my classic Whyte JW4. This week, though, I bought shock mounting bushes for the JW at £36 then the last time I rode my Boardman FS Pro I picked up a stick which got stuck in the transmission. This was enough to break 2 teeth off the middle cog. It was terminal so I had no choice but to find the cheapest GX 11 speed cassette I could. CRC. £85 instead of the list price of £115. It arrived in a couple of days and will be tested to destruction today! I didn't replace the chain since it's only done a dozen rides since I replaced it previously.

Up to now about £250 ish, on:

    2 new conti trail kings.
    11-42 cassette & new chain.
    rear derailleur.
    bottom bracket.
    headset.
    new gear inners/outers.

Not done yet as I need new pads, fork & shock service plus I probably need new SPD boots come winter, probably another shifter at some point as I use at least one or 2 a year! After going tubeless too so an airshot or similar and the valves/sealant etc as well So probably double that to at least £500.

Still a fairly cheap sport though?

It is too much trouble to gather up what I spent at all the different suppliers, but for some reason I record what I spend at CRC. This year it's £153 to date, but is typically £550. On top of that is the suspension servicing, and then there's the stuff I spend with other suppliers, like the SRAM GX 12-speed upgrade to my Capra I did recently, with stuff from all over the place. That was about £400, by the time I'd got the LBS to correct a few errors I'd made!

Just about to order a tyre, that'll be another £30.

I stumbled upon this thread, and it got me thinking so I took a look and it makes depressing reading!

    64p/km in 2018
    73p/km in 2017

It would be so much cheaper to drive!

I'm at about £1/km at the moment as I bought a new bike last year.
That should come down in theory however by all accounts my spending appears to be keeping pace with the kms.

Less than my wife thinks. She knows that this year I've bought a Castelli Alpha ROS jacket, new bars, tape and cables, but they've just been joined by a torque wrench, new bottle cages, and some shoes & pedals I've had buried away since last September...

A Direto. eTap, Power2max, Force chainset, K edge Garmin Mount and other goodies for the best bike, done one 77 mile ride on it so far

Commuting bike that I do 70-80% of my miles on - a new £12 chain that I haven’t even fitted yet.

Hmmm, depends what you drive and where.

I'm getting into my track days, my last outing at Anglesey cost about £300 (fuel & entry fee) but spent about £2k on upgrades just prior to that, tyres, discs & pads, new coilover suspension, bushes & arms etc and the car now needs a new breather system plus some engine work so thats probably another £1k.
After that I'll be looking at bigger brakes and a hybrid turbo to get up to 400 horsies so another £3-4k...

Tyres and pads add up to about £450 and should last 4 track days maybe?

    Comparatively, MTB'ing is a very cheap sport/hobby!

Might have to sell a kidney at some point!

I keep coming back to this thread.

It's not about how much money I spend, it's how much fun I have as a consequence. That sounds like a recipe to spend more, to increase the fun! But I'm such a tight 4rse that I don't spend as much as I could do so. However, if my knees keep getting worse and there is no prospect of them getting better, then sooner or later I'll be selling the current bikes and buying an e-Bike! Now they are serious money! (£1200-£1500 MORE than you would normally spend on a bike  ).

well I bought a Cervelo S5 with Shimano Powermeter so everything else pales into insignificance!!!!

Amazing how cheap my wife thinks it was though :)
  • I'm not sure I really want to think about this.

    $1200 for used bike
$300 for stuff to make the used bike fit me
$100 for new cables and disc pads
$200 for parts to build a new rear wheel for the old bike that the bike above was supposed to replace, but i decided to keep.
$300 to have somebody build a new back wheel for the old bike because after about 1000mi. I decided that that didn't go well.
$200 phone call to above wheel builder to say make it a pair because matchy-matchy
$200 entry fees for various organized two wheeled slogs so I can ride without carrying my own PBJ.
    $250 stupid jerseys.
$100 for new bike shoes found on sale in February but still in the box because who wants to break in new bike shoes? Holes in the old ones aren't really noticeable -- from a distance
$300 for various tires picked up when on sale but not really needed. The ones I like because they never wear out ....
$300 for various bike tools because my wife has taken up biking and we now have 5 bikes. I need to take up some of the maintenance.
$50 for repair manuals because I skipped a few decades of biking and you can no longer fix a squeak in the drivetrain by hitting the cotters with a sledge hammer.
$100 for a torque wrench because things are now aluminum, carbon, titanium, not ever-forgiving steel.

I am not going to total this up.

    £0 :)

Thought I might new sealant as it's been over a year since I went tubeless, but my tyres are still holding air so all good for now.

  • To much considering my bike had to have new wheels after 4 months and 321 miles from buying it new; because the ones it came with wheren't even serviceable! New wheels, Maxle and other stuff to keep a 4 grand bike alive!

HHmmm, so much for consumer rights

It’s been a pretty big few months for me.

    Second hand hardtail. £175
Bits to get that going. £35

Then came the Bird Aeris 120. £2400 (give or take a few quid)

    Full face helmet. £43
    New gloves. £10
Socks. £12 (LOVE my Nukeproof socks)
    Valve cores. £2
    Finned brake pads. £20
    Peaty push ons. £4

Adding that up in my head I make that £2711.

HOWEVER I got £1400 from my insurance for my old bike and sold the salvageable bits for £400.

So I make that a net spend of £911.
