Hi All.
Tech question. I have a set of these. From looking at www photos, they're from early to mid 90's.
They are pretty cool retro things.
I lucked out and picked them up for nothing (!!!) They're not fitted to any bike at present.
They have huge fat brake cables still attached.
Every photo I have seen of them on the www which shows them with cables shows them with huge fat brake cables.
My question is, do these things have to be fitted with fat brake cables?
Sorry, can't upload a photo.
Cheers, F

Found these.
First is similar type, M091 with fat cables.

next is my type, M092

No cables shown.
Can't seem to find pics I previously found showing my levers with bigger cable size.
Dunno if that helps.
No stress, a trip to the LBS for some brain picking in the cold may be imminent.

Are you talking about inners or outers? Brake cables are thicker than gear cables, and have different ends.I don't do smileys.

From memory gear cable outer has a diameter of 4 mm whilst brake outer and brake hose is 5 mm. I believe early shimano brake cable outer had larger diameter, 6mm springs to mind.0

Modern cable inners are 1.2mm for gears and 1.6mm for brakes.
Brake inners in the 80's and 90's were 'oversized' at something like 2.0mm. That's what you have, Funkydee.

Thanks people, food for thought and further research.

AFAIK the ends are the same, so you can use thinner cables and outers, just with older end caps packed out a bit.I don't do smileys.

Separate brakes and shifters are better anyway.I don't do smileys.
