Snaped chain. Shall I still use it?

Chain snapped on my Tiagra 9 speed as I was pulling away from a standing position on cog six on the small ring. I used the chain tool to remove the two broken links and joined it with one of the pins. So now I have a shimano chain with a used pin rather than the shimano chain joining specific pin. Do I still take a chance with this chain which has done about 600 miles or go for a new chain?

Join it with a quick link - not one of the used pins. You know there is a workshop forum for this kind of stuff, don't you?0

600 miles isn't a lot for a chain. You should be getting at least double that, even in cr@p conditions.
Was the chain the correct length? Were you cleaning and lubing it regularly?0 -
A quick link is a great idea for a few reasons - cleaning, swapping etc. Also, in your case the chain is a link shorter than it should be so you need to get another link back in.
I'd echo Cooldad's comments about getting a KMC chain. Always used them on my mtbs/road bikes and never had a problem with any one of them. Had a couple of Shimano ones go though....0 -
Quick link will get your home but in my opinion, if a chain has broken once its likely that some of the other links aren't far behind.
You can pick up a decent 9 speed chain for < £10, worth it for peace of mind for me.0 -
True ^^ but I have some with multiple quick links.I don't do smileys.

It depends. If it was the shimano joining pin which caused the failure then the rest of the chain links could be fine.
A quick link actually becomes the strongest part of the chain.
OP for the sake of a tenner though i would just replace the chain.0 -
I will replace the chain and thanks for the info on quick links. I'll get a couple for future use. There is no point gambling on this chain and then snapping it again 20 miles from hoe. To the replier who suggested this should have gone on the workshop forum, yes it should, but I seem to get more replies on this forum.0

You would also get more replies if you headed your post ladies with big boobs, but that's not really the point.I don't do smileys.

It just makes you look like you don't really know what you're doing - and I'm sure you don't want that.0 -

The 1st bit of your response is decent, the second bit is just condescending. We are all aware of the differing forums but its not necessary to stick to their topicality that strictly.
I wouldnt reuse shimano pins except for emergency. Also given the price of a chain, I would just replace the whole thing. If I do reconnect a chain, its using a quick link as suggested.0 -

Nobody said it was, but the guy is repeatedly posting technical queries in here. I'm struggling to see how it is in any way 'condescending' to suggest he posts technical queries in the technical part of the forum.
(Good job I didn't mention the 'Harry Potter-esque 'snaped' chain..)0 -
J have posted a few technical problems in this forum recently, and yes they should have gone on the workshop forum. From now on they will do. On the snapped chain issue, I goi on the bike rhis evening to cycle to the corner shop abd the chain broke at the point I joined it at about 100 metres down the road.0

It implies he is too stupid to know about, or lazy to check out the other forums and their uses (not quite as bad as telling people to google something which is a bugbear of mine). I see what you mean if its a reoccurring thing tho. I typically don't look at usernames of posts.0 -

Seriously, it doesn't. Sometimes people need the obvious pointing out to them. Sounds like you're just looking for grief with Imposter.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0 -

Says the actual keyboard warrior, while ironically posting his own hostile, condescending reply..
(at least I answered the original question - you just came out of your cave to post an ad hominem. You do that alot on my posts, I've noticed. Maybe try getting a life or something..)0 -
If you've repaired a 9 speed chain just by pushing an old pin back in you might get away with it. But would you still have 100% confidence in the thing? How much do you value your teeth and testicles?
With 10 and 11 speed chains you'd need either a new Shimano snap-off joining pin or a quick link.
I tend to post mechanical type stuff in Workshop because it gets the right kind of attention. And being a long time bike tinkerer I also search specifically for new workshop posts in case I can help somebody out in return.
I actively avoid anything to do with racing, training, power meters, MTBs etc because I have nothing to offer and it doesn't interest me.0 -

If you were nicer I could stay in my cave
My answer, buy a new chain and carry a pair of quick links in your saddle bag/rear pocket.0
