Crashed my lovely carbon S-Works in a pile up during a crit in the summer so looking for a solid aluminium bike which will be adequate for racing Crits, TLi and so on.

Choices -

Specialized Allez Sprint 2018 (stock wheel replacement needed) - £1600

Canyon Ultimate AL SLX 2018 -£2500

Mason Definition 2018 -£2700

Cheers for any advise,

Joe

If you don't mind building from scratch, then Bowman Palace R is also a good option. Built mine for - £1800 with full Ultegra R8000 groupset and ROL Race SL wheels.

There's LOTS of aluminium frames that would work. You don't need to pay anything Like those prices.

    Ouch! Gutted for you.
    Did you have insurance?

I would go for the Allez.
It has the same geometry as the s-works and is a really cracking frame.

Tbh if you're going to use it primarily for crits then I would look at this

Its cheap and would leave plenty from your budget for some quality wheels and groupset (Although again if your racing crits I would only go shimano 105 or ultegra).
  • Cannondale CAAD12 Ultegra?

Planet X Galibier - SRAM Force 11 build currently going for £1099..

  • Plenty of choice from just about every manufacturer, but the caad12 ultegra with stealth bomber paint job would be my suggestion too. Still needs some better wheels if you are that way inclined but otherwise it's spot on.
  • Caad 9, 10, 12, Bowman Palace, Specialized Allez ... Also consider Worx Bikes RA.SL model. I know a guy here in Mallorca that recommends them and a frameset is only £495. The only issue I had with Worx is I sent them an email and they never replied which annoyed me a little bit. Now I can see they're a fairly small outfit but surely that would mean that is was even more important to reply right ...

Nice frame-set, threaded bottom bracket even.
    Unfortunately no big sizes.

That’s great quality for such a small company. Frames look really nice too. Any pics of yours Pete?

I’m gonna pretend you didn’t ask me the insurance question :(

Yeah totally agree, can pick up a pair of deep rims and 105 Groupset for a sensible price nowadays

There is also the Allez Sprint. It was built for Crit racing.

But do remember don’t race what you can’t replace!

Definitely getting in touch with Worx, hopefully they will get back to me!
  • One bike that is a great crit racer and gets very little thought:

Cannot beat Planet X for value! Although I’m 6ft1 so think the Large will be slightly to small
  • Good thread, some good options being given.

I find the Galibier bike a real conundrum. Ever since I spotted it on the website and saw it up close at the cycle show in 2016 I've really wanted that bike. The spec is obviously pretty good at that price point and I think that blue colour just looks fantastic. Truly is an eye of the beholder moment going on!!

Are there any solid reviews anywhere? It also surprises me that it's priced so close to their aero bike the EC130.
  • There are good deals on the 2017 Kinesis Aethin at Sigma.

Wish there were more reviews on this, its a nice looking frame IMO. The only thing is I wish is that they would have brakes on the seatstays rather than BB. Think it would be more functional rather than look more aesthetically pleasing.
