Snaped rear mech cable stuck in shifter

10 year old Tiagra shifters so no screw underneath the shifter to expose the lower part of the mechanism. If I shine a torch on the exposed mechanism in the highest gear on the shifter I can see the cable end barrel in the bottom of the mechanism
and there is some frayed cable poking out which I can get pliars on to. How can I get the cabel end barrel out? There doesn't seem to be anywhere large enough for it to come through. I know people have managed this before so it can be done. I don't want to start taking the shifter to peices, that will screw up the mechanism. Has anyone got any ideas?
