Campag Veloce chainset with 105 5800 group?

Hi all,
This is my first post on Bike Radar. I apologise if this is a time-worn question - I've tried searching for an answer, but not quite found it.
My current project is converting a late 80s Dave Quinn frame back to gears after a few years as a single speed commuter. I'm erring towards a 105 5800 groupset, but (and I know this shouldn't really matter) I find the chainset really ugly - not at all complimentary to a skinny steel frame.
The Campagnolo Veloce 10 speed looks much better to my eyes, and is currently around the same price. Would it work ok in place of the Shimano? Or would I suffer compatibility issues?
Thanks in advance for any help.
J

A campag chainset will work fine. Fitting the Veloce chainset is easy. However if you ever wish to remove it you have a problem. If the Veloce still has campags Powertorque bottom bracket system you need an expensive special puller to remove it.
Anyway you want a Shimano bike or a Campag bike.Mixing bits just is not cricket.0 -
You could get an RS500 chainset, would keep it Shimano:

Otherwise yeah, campag will work fine, bearing changes are a headache though and the names won't match ;-)0 -
It would work, but:
a) Power Torque is a PITA by all accounts;
b) Mixing like that is just wrong.
Best bet would be to source an older Ultra Torque chainset, and a full Campag gruppo while you're at it!0 -
I'd get 5800 parts in the black friday sales (or buy a groupset and sell the chainset if it works out better) and get a rs500 chainset as suggested above. I've got one on my skinny tubed steel winter bike as the 5800 chainset looked too bulky and clumsy on there. Happy with the decision.
I'm not against the newer look, I've got full 6800 on another bike, but it doesn't suit everything.0 -
I got the 36/52 with BB from here for £60. They still have them

The BB it comes with is silver though so I need to get that sold on whan I get a minute0 -
Great, thanks all. Good ideas about Black Friday and the RS500.0
