Evening all.
Just thought I'd say hello! I've joined up here as I've now taken up road cycling at the grand old age of 39, as I appear to have signed myself up to a (self-designed) charity ride in May! :O
In short, I'm gonna have myself a look around here for opinions on routes, training, kit, how-to's etc...as I'm learning week to week via a couple of local mates and got myself a bike (2nd hand) and clothes but always on the hunt for more.
So, who's around Cumbria? I'm down in the south of the county near J36.

Enjoy your Cycling, what distance is the charity ride?0 -
Cheers guys.
It's a ride around Cumbria, taking in the most north, east, west, south and highest roads (Kirkstone Pass).

I've got a few lycra bits, and my first set of shoes with cleats - what a huge difference!0 -
Well, the route we have planned has now increased to 300 miles, but I'm cycling to the start line so add another 100 to that.
And...had my first 'off' this weekend. After cycling up Shap Summit on Saturday in the snow -
..which ended with no drama, I had a quick ride on Sunday morning on the back roads and found some black ice -
Resulting in finding another knee -
So, having a week off now to recover. Bugger!0 -
Be careful, black ice as you have found out can be very dangerous, I normally use the rollers for an hour when there’s a chance of ice on the roads,0

Good work! I personally find it well worth it if I go out in the cold but as you say, just be really really careful and take it slow. Good roads around Shap, enjoy0

Welcome. If it's cold enough for ice you want your legs covered. Knees don't fare well in cold.
Blimey - Your charity ride - how many days is it over ?0 -
Shave those legs0

I'm on that 2/3 times a week at home for an hour anyway. I'll definitely be more wary now when I'm out.HaydenM wrote:Good work! I personally find it well worth it if I go out in the cold but as you say, just be really really careful and take it slow. Good roads around Shap, enjoy
Cheers. You local or just know the roads?cougie wrote:Welcome. If it's cold enough for ice you want your legs covered. Knees don't fare well in cold.

Funnily enough a pair of bib leggings arrived in the post yesterday (courtesy of Black Friday sales).
The main ride is about 300 miles over 4 days. My added 100 (at the moment) is over 3/4 days depending where I ride. A pootle to warm up.DavidJB wrote:Shave those legs
