    Cavendish.

Cipollini racked up loads of Giro stages on friendly courses against little opposition. Couldn't reach the first rest day in the Tour.

    Cavendish isn't finished

Thats a good point, but assumes you think Cipo is better and also begs the question , what would Cav have to do to overtake him?

They're very close in terms of actual results but I think Cavs points jersey in all 3 GTs clinches it for me.

In a palmares tie Cipo would edge it on account of his skin suits, general Italian love god status and tax evasion.

Cavendish - 3 x world champ on the track and doesnt have the gaping hole in his sprinting palmares that Cipollini has - never making it to Paris to win on the champs elysee
  • Cavendish for me.

The overall number of GT wins - and their overall palmares - are remarkably similar, despite the grand tours moving away from multiple sprint stages. Both have worn the rainbow bands. Cavendish has the better track palmares though, and has arguably had tougher competition in the sprints. The clincher is that Cavendish has taken the points jerseys in all three GTs.

    Cavendish. Definitely.

Tour Stage >>> Giro Stage and as mentioned above, he's got the full set of points jerseys.

Cipo probably suffered from his team not being invited to the Tour, especially towards the end of his career. For instance in 2002 he won MSR, the World title, 9 stages of the Giro and Vuelta and was 9th in Flanders, yet didn't merit an invite to the Tour. Indeed, he wasn't invited from 2000-2003, despite wearing the rainbow jersey. Given that he won 4 stages in 1999, it's perhaps fair to say he would have picked up a few more had he been invited for those 4 years.
  • Didn't Cavendish also catch and pedal past Cipo 1-legged in a prologue at the Tour of California c.07/08?

Right, and whose fault for repeatedly jiggering off to the beach was that lack of an invite, hmm?

Where do they stand with monument wins ? Is it one MSR each ?

Was a fan of Cipo and as he's a Brit Cav too so very hard to split them both.

Cav winning across three GTs will just edge it, he just needs to work on the skin suits

if you read the whole sentence you will see it says "and as he's a Brit too Cav". Although I could have used a bit of punctuation to make it clearer

Cav for me. Cipollini rocked it back in the day but it seened like it was less competition in those days ? His train was always great to watch.

Worth noting that Cipo also had 2 podiums at MSR (and 2 more top 10 finishes), as well as a top 10 in Flanders and 3 wins at Gent Wevelgem. He edges it for me.

Yes but one reason they weren't invited us because traditionally Cipo climbed off after the first week.

Cav by a mile. On form and on his day he’s been the best sprinter I’ve ever seen, Cippo was very good for his time but should have at least got to the Champs elysees once or twice rather than being a bit of a douche…. Can Cav get those 4 tour stages though? Having said that as the best sprinter in the tour, numbers wise I can’t see many beating him (on race wins rather than green jerseys) as the best sprinter there…
