Scheduling maintenance (or living with creaks till spring)
The headset bearing on my winter bike has died. I've brought it back to life temporarily by breaking it open and packing the bearings with grease, but it's really rough and steering feels pretty awful.
A new bearing is on its way, but I'm thinking of saving replacing it till after winter - it was the cold and wet which finally killed it in the first place.
Does anyone else save general maintenance till after a rough, wet winter? Or just change it before it does any more damage?
I'm thinking of doing the same with the BB on my other bike - no point changing it now when its useful lifetime is measured in #winters.

If you leave your rough headset bearings long enough I think one possibility is the headset could could seize resulting in you
visiting A&E . Alternatively, the bearing race breaks up resulting in lots of play in the headset,you then ride the bike home with the steerer knocking hell out of the frame. The result of that could be a knackered frame.
I would fix it sooner rather than too late.
