Looking to spend no more than about £40. Looking for some recommendations. Currently have a £5 jobby from Planet X that dips in and out with every passing bump in the road.

Not looking for a set, already have a decent rear light that's bright.

Don't want one that requires a battery pack, but wouldn't mind if I could get one that lights up an unlit country road if budget allows.

Thanks

  • I just got a £25 chinese one from Amazon (http://amzn.to/2zOnos1) single CREE LED, and this thing is crazy bright. Usb cable, so can use any external phone charger with it too, so can carry a spare.

Looks relatively well built, even so - if its unfixable, I can buy a couple for the same price as some of the branded ones.

Comes with a free rear light too - although not much light from it.

Does it have an external battery?
  • Magicshine mj900 from PX, it does go below £40, was £34 recently. Had mine a year, been solid.

Got a Moon Meteor Storm Lite a few weeks ago, £49.99. Goes up to 1100 lumens, runs for hours and hours on around 500 lumen mode.

    Very happy with it.

I have an FWE from Evans for bang on £40. I use it for country / town rides for approx. 1.5 hours to 2 hours. It doesn't have many options which in my opinion is a bonus, so you only cycle through a max of 4 different options to get to the brightness setting you want. For the majority of the ride I use it at 250 lumen which is bright enough, then for darker sections I go up to 500 lumens - this again is plenty bright enough. One other plus is the size of the button on the front makes it very easy to click through the different settings with thick gloves on.
Swapping between bikes is a doddle as well, takes seconds.

Its advertised as being waterproof and I've had no issues with water so far.

The battery is similar to a mobile phone battery charger, that you just strap to the frame of the bike - its just got a USB port that you plug the light into. It's just handy to be able to take/source a new battery aswell.

  • Wiggle's lifeline stuff is normally pretty solid - 720 alleged lumens for £40 on the nail. Fits your spec, internal battery etc.

  • Lumina Niterider 750. Got mine for £42. Great light with great run time.
  • Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I'm no closer to knowing what it is exactly that I'm after. Think I'm erring on the side of 700-1000 lumens but don't want an external battery. Christmas is coming I suppose

    This.

I would normally say go for exposure lights as imo they are the best, but they are expensive.

The lifeline gives good light output, has decent battery life, and receives good reviews. Plus it's within your budget.

Only downside is it's currently out of stock.

I have the older 500 lumen Wiggle lifeline one and it's been great.
Holds its charge well and 18months later it still still works liek new.

Used this last winter on unlit roads and had no issues with it. Battery lasted about 2 1/2 hours.
    Excellent price

I'm in a similar position, looking for a new front light. A little more than £40, but does anyone have a view on the Magicshine Monteer 1400 http://www.magicshine.com/product/monteer-1400-usb-bicycle-light/? I've had a Magicshine something or another with a separate battery pack for about five years, I damaged the cable a couple of years back in a minor crash and left in on the shelf. I dug it out and managed to fix the cable recently, but the battery now only lasts about 20 minutes, so either a new battery pack or new light. The Monteer 1400 looks nice and compact and very bright. I don't want to blind oncoming traffic or other cyclists though, so any comments on the beam pattern of this one, or the others mentioned above would be appreciated.

I've got a Philips light with a dynamo on the main commuting bike, which is great, but I'm looking for something to use on unlit roads with the decent bike when I don't need the panniers.
