So this year is my 40th birthday and I decided to follow through on what I had always promised myself and put an order in for a custom steel road frame. Earlier this year I happened to be in Verona and visited Dario Pegoretti for a fit, and placed an order for a MxxxxxO.

Unfortunately whilst awaiting my frame my dad contracted cancer and he passed away a couple of weeks ago, what was originally a 40th birthday present has more become a homage to my dad, who got me into bikes in the first place. Dario painted the "don't count the days" quote in reference to my dad and the colour is inspired by a Basquiat painting in a newspaper supplement I sent to Dario.

Build will be over winter but likely to be Campagnolo groupset and wheels and Fizik finishing kit. I'm thinking of getting the stem painted the okra colour of the frame.

Wow! Love what you've done there. It's so much more than just a bike with how you've woven some of your back story into the paintjob and actually going out there and meeting Dario. Can't wait to see the finished bike and hear how it rides.

  • What a treat and tribute - I have indexed this thread and look forward to seeing her complete.

I would keep the stem matching the other finishing kit in gloss black, let the frame speak and the finishing kit function... just my thoughts and it’s your bike so you will know what you like.

Get to work and keep us informed

My wife suggested the same RE the stem, I'm torn! The frame comes with a Falz carbon fork, its Pegoretti's own design made by Columbus I believe.
  • Lovely tribute. Got to be a black stem.

That is going to be one special bike, love it.

I did a similar thing a few years ago. I received a small inheritance when my very elderly grandmother died and used the money to buy a bespoke Enigma. Went down to Sussex and met the guys and a few months later a titanium work of art appeared. I'd love to say that my grandmother got me into cycling, or that she once raced Beryl Burton, but she was more of a Saturday afternoon wrestling fan. Still it is a nice way to remember her. The bike is called The Bishop, in honour of her maiden name.

I hope you're making plans to ride the finished bike around Italian Alpes and Dolomites.

I did the 2015 edition. By far the best event I've taken part in.

This is going to look lovely and what a lovely tribute.

Black stem though! I can't wait to see it finished.

Beautiful - If you don't mind saying, how much was the cost of the frame?

Looking forward to seeing this built up
  • You visiting Dario for a fitting and ordering the frame shows you are 'making the days count'.
I am sorry to hear about your Dad.

Lovely paint job, too. See how the frame looks once it is built up (natural carbon Falz fork, presumably?). It may be you could have a second stem painted to match the frame, enabling you to 'ring the changes' every now and again. I presume you will be keeping this frame a long time.

I had a Marcelo several years ago and enjoyed riding something built by 'the Great Man'.

Look forward to more pictures as you get it built up.

    Enjoy,

    David

The frame was about £2800 including ciavete paint scheme (about £700), Falz fork, Chris King headset, seat collage and front mech mount. Obviously the week pound has made affected the cost.

Good idea RE the stem. Dario painted the Falz fork the same colour as the frame. The plan is to keep it forever, since the frame was custom made and for my long torso/short inseam.

That paint job randomly reminded me of the adidas t-shirts that Edberg wore in the late 80s

Just been reading an old BR thread about Pegoretti bikes. There was talk of having to buy via an (allegedly) unpleasant London dealer as Dario had some exclusivity contract with him. Is this still the case? Also, what is your wait time for a custom frame?
    Thanks.

It was going to be a slightly pauper spec due to spending more on the frame being upgraded from the Duende to the Mxxxxxxo, however since my dad passed, I've decided to use some of my inheritance and go all out on the spec. I think it will be fitted with Super Record, Bora's etc.

I guess that would have been Mosquito, and I think they went bust a few years ago now. I ordered directly from Pegoretti via email. I actually asked for some advice from another forum member that had just posted his Pegoretti here, Meester Smith. I think we both had a similar experience in good comms and Dario personally answers emails. From ordering in April, it took around 6 months, but I did say don't rush. I think the current lead time is around 4 months. I was lucky enought to visit Dario for both the fitting and to collect the frame, so I can't comment on other aspects of the process such as remote fitting and delivery.

That would indeed have been the late Mosquito, I didn't realise their contract was exclusive.
