Fitting mechanical disc brakes

If people give me the bits, I'm usually quite good at fitting them, but my lack of knowledge is not helping here.
I'm trying to save some money and use bits from my current cantilever bike and build a new mechanical disc bike.
Will my current shimano sti shifters work on mechanical disc brakes or do I need some different specific ones? if so what would I need?
Cheers

Yes, but you need brakes with the right pull ratio. For instance there are 2 versions of BB7s, one for MTB levers, the other for road levers. It's normally quite well documented if you know to look out for it...
    Pannier, 120rpm.

Thank you. I didn't know that, but I now know what to look for.
  • GET HY/RDs, the only way.
