Just wondered where you purchase your cables from, gear & brake & outer cables.

Is it easier and cheaper to order from the large on-line retailers ?

From the LBS from the big Shimano box in the corner of the workshop.

Works out about £10 for brake inner and outrage, same for gear and you get a chance to have a laugh and drink their coffee at the same time.

  • Jagwire Road Racer set off eBay. Usually best prices on eBay but you can check the other online retailers too.

I always use the Jagwire Brake/Shifter Racer Kits too. Good quality and they use a compression less brake cable housing which gives a firmer feel plus kit includes everything you need and less expensive than most other cables of the same quality. BUT if you're looking for the black color for some reason they have been unavailable for awhile. Emailed Jagwire trying to find out why but no response from them. Anybody know why they're not available?
  • I'm doing a new build and found lots of places out of stock of jagwire and other makes. Wondered into Halfords and they had the Clarks teflon coated kits in stock for £9.99 each ( brake and gear). All ferrules etc included.

How does Jagwire compare to standard (Chorus and above) Campag brake and gear cable sets?

I don't get through many, but like to keep a few spares so I can fix stuff quickly. I buy the bog standard Shimano inners and outers online with bigger orders for components / clothing.

Occasionally when I have to replace a rear brake or gear cable because it's fraying at the clamp I'll trim it and keep it as a spare for use with a front brake / mech. And then when I need one I'll forget all about them and fit / trim a new one. I should chuck them away really...

Wiggle Lifeline ones for me, well for the winter build.
£3 for a complete set with stainless cables and inners (so £6 for both)

For my nice bike I used the Shimano kit.

My 9yr old Giant still has its original Jagwire cables  . Reasonable pricing and great quality. No need to spend more. I also have Jagwire cables on my nice bike and winter trainer. Clarkes cables I use on my commuter - cheap and cheerful, had one instance of the outer cable wearing through.

Tend to buy from CRC as spares for the tool box or Halfords in an emergency on the way home.

There are fake Jagwires on feckbay, just be cautious.

    Exactly this.

Find a good shop and they will prelube them for you and throw in free cable ends. So much cheaper than buying a set. I used to use Jagwire but the outer cables don’t have enough flex in them compared to many other brands.

Try feeding them through carbon handle bars. It will eat your soul. I now just stick to LBS bought cables taken from said box/reel
