Squeaking Jockey Wheel

Hi, I got a squeaking jockey wheel in my 105 derailleur. Bike I'm using is a Giant Defy 1 2016 model. How do I fix it?

I tried removing the wheel, washed it and re-lubed it and installed it back on. And still didn't work. The bastard thing still squeaks. What should I do? Thanks. I do not wish to waste some money to buy replacement jockey wheels unless thats the only option.

One interesting thing to note is when I ride in the rain, the squeaking stops. When it stops raining and the water on the Defy dries off, the squeaking comes back. Thats not to say I will squirt some water onto the derailleur, silly and irresponsible.

  • I "wasted" £6.99 in Decathlon on a set of Tacx jockey wheels with actual bearings when I thought that mine needed replacing (worn & squeaking). No more squeaking & they run considerably more freely than the bearingless junk supplied on the mech from new ever did...

I now have a spare set to hand "just in case"

    Is it a carbon frame?

Tacx jockey wheels are fine (I use nothing else) but the "glide bearings"of any cheap derailleur can be lubricated by taking them apart and put a little motor oil between bush and wheel/washers.

It's definitely the jockey wheel and not the chain? A friend brought his bike over to me recently, saying it was squeaking all the time. It sounded like a jockey wheel when I turned the pedals, so I took them off, lubed and refitted - the squeak was still there. I lubed the chain and it disappeared! He's had the bike 2 years and I don't think he's ever lubed anything!

Me too. Never had a squeaking jockey wheel, but had a squeaking chain when I was having an ill-fated dabble with wax based lubes.

I occasionally dismantle / clean / repack with grease the jockey wheels in my 105 and Tiagra mechs. Not because they squeak or become stiff, more just preventive maintenance / cos I like taking things to bits.

If you want to 'upgrade' them you can pick up the Ultegra ones with bearings off Ebay for not very much

It's a £1000 bike but you don't want to waste money on a cheap jockey wheel ?

Buy a replacement and fit it and see if the squeak goes away. Easier than what you've already done.

    £6.50 for a straight replacement
  • Update: Oiled the chain. It reduced like 90% of it. No need to buy a new jockey wheel after all. I don't understand how lubing the chain stops the jockey wheel squeaking, strange. If its really the chain, then the squeaking should come from the whole drive train, not from one little jockey wheel.

The angular movement from one chain link to the next will be greatest at the jockey wheels.

Amazing what a difference a little routine maintenance makes....
