Can I mix different sealants?

I can no longer hear sealant sloshing around in my Gavia SL tyres on a Defy bought in April. The rims are CF so really would prefer not to dismount them if possible. I have both a tyre bead jack & an AirShot so could do so if & when I need to. I have both Orange Seal & Stan's sealant (bought mainly for my hybrid wheels I've just converted - not fun!)

My question is it OK to mix sealants? Rang the shop, they said the original was probably Giant's own which may well be someone else's anyway.

  • On the face of it, it's just sealant. It sloshes into the hole, goes off, plugs. So, topping up should be fine.

But the variable is the extent to which one compound might react with another and reduce the effect. I understand that synthetic and non synthetic sealant don't play well. This requires you to determine what you have, which you don't know.

Can you not just unping one side of the bead, hose it down, put back on, fill?

  • Yes I wouldn't risk it if possible, do as bender said.

Thanks both! I’m going to have to remove the tyres at some point so probably better to do it at home in the warm. My reluctance is based on having no previous experience with CF rims & the potential damage when using levers (mine are fairly broad plastic ones but I did snap one out of another pair getting a Conti Gator Hardshell 25c off a Stan's Grail rim)

Just rang the Giant shop in Guildford - they told me that Giant's sealant was rebadged Stan's. I've just removed the valve core then poked down the Orange S dip stick - about 1cm remaining so is probably Latex-based that's the same as I have. Am going to decide at a later date - pumping up tyres with bronchitis ain’t fun.
  • If you are going on the assumption that the chemical compounds in each are the same otherwise you are just putting 2 liquids together that might not react when exposed to air and seal.
  • Stan's Race is slightly different to normal Stan's so bear that in mind. But assuming it's stock Stan's then topping up shouldn't be problematic.

Why are you going to pump up the tyres with bronchitis? Why not just normal air? Won't bronchitis weigh more anyway because of all the lurghi in it?
