Tyre Width Help

Hello
I have recently purchased a second hand Specialized Allez Elite. I want to use the bike for fitness training mainly, but would like to occasionally ride down the odd canal path, un-made up track etc. The lettering on the wheels is ETRTO 622 X 14. I have got my local cycle shop to fit Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres but they have used 25mm saying they are the widest the bike will take. Before I use the bike, can someone please tell me if 28mm tyres would fit. I'm sure I read somewhere that they would, but need to get my facts straight before I get the tyres changed or start using the ones I already have.
Many thanks.

I think 28's are a bit too tight on the Allez - I ride with max 25mm0

I think the Marathon Pluses come up big. If you have the bike you can see how much clearance you have on it. You need a bit of space in case you pick up stones and things.0
