Bloody BB30 replacement

So the trusty CAADX is starting to creak (done nearly 3000 miles) from the BB.

Can I strip it out and replace with the FSA bb30 replacement kit (£16)

Then I'd need a 105 5800 chainset (£85), and which bottom bracket to go in the replacement kit? It says 68mm English Threaded.

It's not super urgent, but instead something I'm aiming to do during 1/2 term - about 3 weeks or so. And will I need any specialist tools? I've never touched the BB since getting last year.

You can... easy enough and aternatives out there.
However, BB30 does like a little bit of tlc.... why not undo the crankset ( normally all you need is a 10mm allen key) and have a look see as to the state of the bearings and inside the BB shell? It is a 2 minute job.
I'd be surprised if everything is pristine to say the least.

I've had CAADs for years and had a lot of creaks/groans on them. Every time I was convinced it was the BB and every time it was something else.

I've eventually had the 10 speed 105 on my oldest (winter) bike replaced with an 11 speed 105 after 5+ years of use and used a praxis converter to fit the new Shimano cranks - but I think the BB30 was still okay.
  • I'd try un-torquing the BB assembly first and re-torquing before thinking about spending any $$$.

Sometimes BB30 just feels the need to remind you that it's still there, and that you don't really hate it afterall....

Just re-greasing the contact point between the BB30 axle and the inner ring of the bearings does away with the most frequent bottom bracket creaking on my Cannondale - usually needs redoing every 3-4 months during wetter months

Tried a Praxis converter for a while and it creaked more than the original BB30 so that was a short lived experiment

    Cheers for the advice.

I'll strip it down over the weekend, but I've never done a bb30 before so it's more nerves as I can't bear to drive through lyndhurst with the roadworks til November.

Looks like YouTube and bike strip down in the kitchen then. I'm right in thinking that undoing the crankset means I'll be able to slot out with a bit of encouragement, and the bearings will remain in place in the bike?

The FSA sleeve adapter WILL NOT fit a CAADX.
    I speak from previous experience.

This photo shows how it won't go through. There's a non-machined strip the runs round the BB shell - This is the darker strip, you can see the threaded end of the adapter behind it

And this is what happens if you don't realise and keep trying to press it in, you can see the buckle near the frame :?

I started a thread about it here

As a side note, the Praxxis BB is now over 5000 miles and noise free

I bet you had loads of fun getting that out - were you using a hydraulic press to get it in!

Had to take it to work to get it pressed out, and got the band removed. But it was pressed in by hand, using a 15mm threaded bar, some "custom made" washers, and a couple of big spanners
