Shimano disc caliper compatibility...

I have a problem with my front caliper on my 6 month old Giant Defy Advanced 1. During a sportive last weekend at some point it decided to jam partially on.

I'm taking it back to the shop I bought it from tomorrow, for them to take a look at. One of the pistons is not retracting fully. I have cleaned it and replaced it, but it still wont seat properly in the caliper. The seals look fine and it wasnt leaking (until I took the piston out of course).

Its a BR RS-505

I cant find a direct replacement online that will arrive in any less than 10 days time, and i'd like to be out riding again as soon as possible. I'm thinking the warranty situation is likely to take at least a week to sort it self out.

I've found an upgrade in the form of ultegra calipers, which will fit on the mountings, and are for the right size rotor (140mm). but will I need to change the rotor too?...

Thanks in advance

James

You won't need to change the brake disc.

Ok - so are all the Shimano road disk calipers compatible? I also have a problem with a BR-RS5050 flat mount front caliper and was looking to replace with a 5800 105 caliper or maybe the latest Ultegra caliper - are hose fittings and fluid volumes needed to operate the brakes all compatible?

Check out the Shimano compatibility chart here

There might be a more recent one as that is dated June 2018. Search for section c-499 or go to page 22 of 52.

ST is the lever, BH is the brake hose, and BR is the calliper.I believe product codes underlined in blue are new parts, I'm not sure that the other colour indicates.
