Any ideas on a beginner friendly commuter route from Wakefield to Leeds

Hi,
Got a colleague who is looking for something which isn't main roads. The main problem is crossing two motorways.
Having just got an other colleague on the Leeds Core Cycle Route in from Alwoodley, I can't find anything similar (off road tarmac paths and residential roads) coming in from Wakefield direction until Middleton. If he has survived the main roads to there he can probably do the rest! : )
I live up the Aire valley so don't know the cycle routes South all that well.
Any ideas or possibilities much appreciated.
